Governor H. Rex Lee Auditorium
The Governor H. Rex Lee Auditorium, also called Fale Laumei ("Turtle House") in Samoan, is the largest indoor meeting space in the United States territory of American Samoa. It is located in the village of Utulei, surrounded by other government buildings. The main body of the building is a roughly ovoid structure, with a curved roof (finished with wooden shakes) that is reminiscent of the thatch roofs of traditional Samoan structures. The auditorium was built in 1962 under orders from Governor Hyrum Rex Lee as part of a major initiative to modernize the territory's infrastructure and facilities. It was built by a construction squadron of the United States Navy, and was completed in time for the 1962 South Pacific Conference. It was later named in honor of Lee, who was the territory's longest-serving governor, and oversaw much of its modernization. There are three numbered territorial highways in the United States territory of American Samoa. These highways are often referred to as "ASXXX" (example: AS001 is American Samoa Highway 001). In addition to the three numbered routes, there are unnumbered highways on the islands of Ofu, Olosega, Tau, and Tutuila. International Market Place
International Market Place is an open-air shopping center located in Waikiki, Waikīkī on the island of Oahu, O‘ahu. It first opened in 1956 as a commercial, retail and entertainment center. After closing for complete renovation in 2013, the International Market Place reopened on August 25, 2016. Revenues from the International Market Place directly support The Queen's Medical Center, The Queen’s Medical Center. Leone High School
Leone High School is a senior high school in Vailoatai and Leone, in the Western District, American Samoa. It is operated by the American Samoa Department of Education. It is the second-largest high school on Tutuila Island. It was opened in September 1965. It was designed for students from the Western District and transfer students from Manua. Central island and Eastern District students attended the High School of American Samoa at Utulei, later to be known as Samoana High School. Leone High School was the second structure in American Samoa to receive an honor for its design. The same architects, Wimberly, Whisenand, Allison, and Tong of Hawai'i, received their first award for the Governor H. Rex Lee Auditorium. StarKist Tuna is a brand of tuna produced by StarKist Co., an American company formerly based in Pittsburgh's North Shore that is now wholly owned by Dongwon Industries of South Korea. It was purchased by Dongwon from the American food manufacturer Del Monte Foods on June 24, 2008, for slightly more than $300 million. In 2021, the headquarters were moved to Reston, Virginia. History StarKist was founded in 1917 in San Pedro, California (known historically as "Fish Harbor") as the French Sardine Company of California, by Martin J. Bogdanovich (an immigrant from Croatia) and several partners. Bogdanovich is known for his innovations related to refrigeration of the seafood product with crushed ice. Rainmaker Hotel
Rainmaker Hotel was a 250-room luxury hotel in Utulei, American Samoa, Utulei, Pago Pago, American Samoa. It was the only proper hotel in American Samoa and was operated by the government. The hotel was at its peak in the 1960s and 1970s, when it was known as the Pacific's Intercontinental Hotel. The hotel was dedicated in November 1965. The four-day hotel opening celebrations began with a flag-raising at the Governor's Office on Flag Day (American Samoa), Flag Day, followed by a royal ‘ava ceremony conducted at the Fagatogo malae by Taumafaalofi and Aumaga of Nu'uuli. The parade that followed was the longest in history. Several members of the U.S. Congress attended and the Air Force Band played music. Owen Stuart Aspinall (September 21, 1927 – February 7, 1997) was an American attorney and politician who served as the 45th Governor of American Samoa from August 1, 1967, to July 31, 1969. He was born in Grand Junction, Colorado; his father was longtime United States Representative Wayne N. Aspinall. After serving in the United States Army during World War II, Aspinall earned his Bachelor of Laws from American University. He served in three government positions before becoming the Governor of American Samoa: the Deputy District Attorney of Mesa County, Colorado; Attorney General of American Samoa; and eventually Secretary of American Samoa, the islands' equivalent of a lieutenant governor. Coco Palms Resort was a resort hotel in Wailua, Kauai County, Hawaii, Wailuā, Kauai, Kauaʻi, Hawaii, Hawaiʻi, that was noted for its Cinema of the United States, Hollywood connections, Hawaiian-themed weddings, torch lighting ceremonies, destruction by a hurricane, and long-standing land disputes. Utulei, American Samoa
Utulei or Utulei is a village in Maoputasi County, in the Eastern District of Tutuila, the main island of American Samoa. Utulei is traditionally considered to be a section of Fagatogo village, the legislative capital of American Samoa, and is located on the southwest edge of Pago Pago Harbor. Utulei is the site of many local landmarks: The A. P. Lutali Executive Office Building, which is next to the Feleti Barstow Library; paved roads that wind up to a former cablecar terminal on Solo Hill; the governor's mansion, which sits on Mauga o Alii, overlooking the entrance to Goat's Island, and the lieutenant governor's residence directly downhill from it; the Lee Auditorium, built in 1962; American Samoa's television studios, known as the Michael J. KVZK-TV
KVZK-TV is the public government-owned broadcaster of the U.S. territory of American Samoa, based in Pago Pago. A subsidiary of the Office of Public Information, currently directed by Tialuga Vince Iuli, it was established in 1964. KVZK-TV broadcasts from the National Register-listed Michael J. Kirwan Educational Television Center in Utulei and maintains a tower on Mount Alava. The operations of KVZK-TV are not licensed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), though other stations on the island are; however, KVZK-TV complies with FCC rules and regulations.
