Gordon Lavergne
Gordon Lavergne (April 6, 1911 – March 21, 1970) was an Ontario political figure. He represented Russell in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as a Progressive Conservative from 1954 to 1963. Background He was born in Eastview, the son of Henry Lavergne. In 1935, he married Yvonne Goulet and they had four children. Lavergne was a merchant. Politics He served as mayor of Eastview (the name of Vanier, Ontario prior to 1969) from 1948 to 1960. He was elected to the Ontario assembly in a 1954 by-election held after the death of Joseph Daniel Nault. Joseph Daniel Nault (August 19, 1888 – March 18, 1954) was an Ontario political figure. He represented Russell in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario as a Progressive Conservative from 1948 to 1954. Albert Benjamin Rutter "Bert" Lawrence MC (March 31, 1923 – March 28, 2007) was a politician in Ontario, Canada. He was a Progressive Conservative member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1963 to 1974 who represented the ridings of Russell and Carleton East. He served as a cabinet minister in the governments of John Robarts and Bill Davis. Background Lawrence was born in Calgary, Alberta, and grew up in Ottawa, Ontario. He was educated at Ashbury College and at Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston, Ontario. He enlisted in the army with the rank of Lieutenant in the 8th Reconnaissance Regiment (VIII Recce). He landed in Normandy in the first week of July 1944. He was decorated with the Military Cross by King George VI for engineering a bridge in an advance action at the Risle River near Brionne, France. Vanier, formerly Eastview, is a neighbourhood in the Rideau-Vanier Ward of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada's east end. Historically francophone and working class, the neighbourhood was a separate city until being amalgamated into Ottawa in 2001. It no longer has a majority francophone population. By 2012 its francophone population had shrunk to less than 40% from 63% in the early 1980s. The neighbourhood is located on the east bank of the Rideau River, across from the neighbourhoods of Lowertown and Sandy Hill, and just south of Rockcliffe Park, New Edinburgh, Lindenlea, and Manor Park. Franco-Ontarians (french: Franco-Ontariens or if female, sometimes known as ''Ontarois'' and ''Ontaroises'') are Francophone Canadians that reside in the province of Ontario. Most are French Canadians from Ontario. In 2016, the Government of Ontario calculated that there are approximately 622,415 francophones residing in the province.
