Gordil
Gordil is a town in the Vakaga Prefecture of the northern Central African Republic. History From 25-26 June 2006, a battle took place in Gordil between joint FACA- force and Chadian rebels of FUC and MPRD which caused casualties. This battle led to the death of 20 rebels, 11 FACA soldiers, and 2 Chadian soldiers. On 11 March 2022, Wagner Group and FACA entered Gordil to conduct door-to-door operations and killed 15 people. On 11 April 2022, Wagner Group and FACA visited Gordil. They killed 22 people and burned houses. On 23 May 2022, Wagner Group revisited Gordil and stayed for three days. During the three days of Wagner's presence, they looted shops. Demography Goula makes up the majority of the town population. Gordil Airport
Gordil Airport is an airstrip serving Gordil, a village in the Vakaga prefecture of the Central African Republic. The airstrip is southeast of Gordil alongside the RN8 road in the northern part of Manovo-Gounda St. Floris National Park. The runway is unusable during the rainy season, and aircraft have to do steep departures and landings in order not to disturb the wildlife in the park. The east end of the runway overruns onto the RN8 road. Gula People
Gula, also spelled ''Goula'', is an ethnic group who lives in Central African Republic, Chad, and Sudan. In the Central African Republic, they live in the northern regions of Vakaga, Bamingui-Bangoran, and Haute-Kotto. History Gula people are believed to have originated from Blue Nile region in Ethiopia. Around 1750, they migrated to Darfur. In Darfur, the Gula people faced hostility from the Fur. Consequently, they migrated to an area near Lake Mamoun, Vakaga, in 1795. Lake Mamoun was chosen because there was plenty of fish, and the area was uninhabited before they arrived. In the 19th century, Gula people were often attacked by slave raiders from Darfur, Dar al Kuti, and Kara. Moreover, they had to pay a tribute of 1,000 slaves, ivory, honey, and copper to Darfur. Enslavement of Gula reached its peak in 1890-1911 when Dar al Kuti's ruler, Muhammad al-Sanussi, sent slave raiders to the Gula region to obtain slaves and pillage the villages. Vakaga
Vakaga is one of the 16 prefectures of the Central African Republic. Its capital is Birao. It covers an area of 46,500 km and has a population of 37,595 (2003 census). The extremely low population density, less than 1 person/km, is a result of the capture of the majority of the region's inhabitants by slave-traders from the Sudan in the second half of the nineteenth century. Birao
Birao is the capital of Vakaga, one of the 14 prefectures of the Central African Republic and was an administrative post in the colony of Ubangui-Shari. In March 2007, the town was almost completely burnt down in the fighting between rebels and government troops in the area. History Under Bokassa Jean-Bédel Bokassa, the military ruler of the Central African Republic in the 1960s and 1970s, sent the family of Alexandre Banza to Birao after Banza attempted to overthrow him. Birao was isolated from the rest of the country and Banza's family was monitored by Bokassa. Banza's wife and nine children were kept in Birao until 1970. Beouane and Goboulo, Banza's two brothers, were also kept in Birao, but were soon imprisoned. Central African Armed Forces
The Central African Armed Forces (french: Forces armées centrafricaines; FACA) are the armed forces of the Central African Republic and have been barely functional since the outbreak of the civil war in 2012. Today they are among the world's weakest armed forces, dependent on international support to provide security in the country. In recent years the government has struggled to form a unified national army. It consists of the Ground Force (which includes the air service), the gendarmerie, and the National Police. The site employs multiple reporters in different provinces of the country. The site has been noted for its anti-Russian sentiment and it has multiple times reported about the presence and activities of Russian mercenaries in the Central African Republic. The Russian embassy in the country has labelled the station as "anti-Russian propaganda". As of February 2021 the site has been blocked by the Central African government. The site owner has been reportedly contacted by Russian paramilitaries with the aim of changing his editorial policies. |
