Gold Cup (sailing)
Scandinavian Gold Cup is a sailing race held annually for 5.5 metre yachts. It is a nation race, meaning that each participant nation can send only one boat/team. Despite its name, it has been an international competition almost through its entire history, and participating is not limited to Scandinavian nations. The event has been held every year since 1919 (with exception of 1920 and 1940–46) making it one of the oldest active sailing trophies. History The Cup was originally established by one of the oldest Finnish yacht clubs, Nyländska Jaktklubben (NJK) in 1919, to celebrate newly achieved Finnish independence, promote sailing and improve relations between Finnish and Swedish yacht racers. As such, it was a Cup for Scandinavian yachts only. At first, the Cup was a challenge competition between Finland and Sweden and it was raced with 40m² Skerry cruisers. Johan Anker
Johan August Anker (26 June 1871 – 2 October 1940) was a Norwegian sailor and yacht designer who competed in the 1908 Summer Olympics, in the 1912 Summer Olympics, and in the 1928 Summer Olympics. Personal life He was born at Refne in Berg, Østfold as a son of wholesaler Christian August Anker (1840–1912) and Christine Charlotte Friis (1848–1899). He was a grandson of landowner and politician Peter Martin Anker, and nephew of landowner and politician Nils Anker and school founder Herman Anker. In March 1895 he married Julie Frederikke Jacobsen (1872–1962). Their son Christian August Anker, born 1896, was a businessman and their son Erik Anker, born 1903, also became a sailor and businessman. The marriage was later dissolved. In January 1910 he married his second wife, renowned feminist Nini Roll Anker (1873–1942). She had formerly been married to Johan's first cousin. Major General Claës-Henrik Bengtsson (B:son) Nordenskiöld (28 July 1917 – 11 November 2003) was a Swedish Air Force officer and sailor. He was Chief of the Air Staff from 1966 to 1970 and acting Chief of the Air Force in 1968. Early life Nordenskiöld was born on 28 July 1917 in Stockholm, Sweden, the son of general Bengt Nordenskiöld and his wife Dagmar Werner. After passing ''studentexamen'' he enrolled at the Swedish Air Force Flying School where he finished first in his class. Career Nordenskiöld was commissioned as an officer with the rank of second lieutenant in the Swedish Air Force in 1941. Nordenskiöld quickly made a career, first as squadron commander at Svea Wing (F 8). He was promoted to ''löjtnant'' in 1943 and served as deputy defense attaché in Washington, D.C. from 1943 to 1945 and was promoted to captain in 1948 and to major in 1953.
