Giulio Da Milano
Giulio da Milano (Nice, 1895 - Turin, 1990) was an Italian painter, teacher and graphic designer. He worked on printing, layout and on several forms of typographic illustrations. He also taught for many years at the Turin graphic design school. In 1934, he published Veltro (named after an Italian dog similar to the greyhound), an expressive, monolinear script typeface that became very popular in Italy among printers that couldn't afford to hire lettering artists for every titling design job. In 1933, he was invested as the director of the art department of the Nebiolo type foundry. In 1935, he created the Neon and Razionale geometric typefaces for that same company. Neon's strokes were always the same width, and the uppercase and lowercase letters have exactly the same height. Each body size had a different height-width proportion, and there were three possible weight series: ''chiara'' (light), ''nera'' (black) and ''ombrata'' (shadowed, letters featured a shadow effect). Counter (typography)
In typography, a counter is the area of a letter that is entirely or partially enclosed by a letter form or a symbol (the counter-space/the hole of). The stroke that creates such a space is known as a "bowl". Latin letters containing closed counters include A, B, D, O, P, Q, R, a, b, d, e, g, o, p, and q. Latin letters containing open counters include c, f, h, s etc. The digits 0, 4, 6, 8, and 9 also possess a counter. An aperture is the opening between an open counter and the outside of the letter. The lowercase ' g' has two typographic variants: the single-storey 'g' has one closed counter and one open counter (and hence one aperture); the double-storey '' has two closed counters. Lineto is a Swiss type foundry founded by Cornel Windlin and Stephan Müller in 1993. In 1998, Lineto launched a website to distribute their fonts digitally. In 2007, Jürg Lehni joined the venture. Alessandro Butti (b. 1893 – d. 1959 in Turin) was an Italian type designer who lived and worked mostly in Turin where he was art director of the Nebiolo type foundry. He also taught at the Scuola Vigliani-Paravia. Microgramma is his most famous face. After Butti's death, his collaborator on that face, Aldo Novarese, added a lower case which was then called Eurostile Eurostile is a geometric sans-serif typeface designed by Aldo Novarese in 1962. Neon (typeface)
Neon is a chemical element with the symbol Ne and atomic number 10. It is a noble gas. Neon is a colorless, odorless, inert monatomic gas under standard conditions, with about two-thirds the density of air. It was discovered (along with krypton and xenon) in 1898 as one of the three residual rare inert elements remaining in dry air, after nitrogen, oxygen, argon and carbon dioxide were removed. Neon was the second of these three rare gases to be discovered and was immediately recognized as a new element from its bright red emission spectrum. Nebiolo Printech
The Fonderia Nebiolo was a manufacturer of printing presses and paper and formerly a type foundry. Nebiolo & Co. was created in 1878 when Giovanni Nebiolo bought out the type foundry of G. Narizzano in Turin, Italy, in 1852. In 1908 the company merged with the Urania Company and operated under the name Augustea and began to buy out many smaller foundries. In 1916 it was again renamed Società Nebiolo. In 1976 in occasion of the renovation of the Company that naturally would have come to an end that year, Fiat entered into the press manufacturing business and the Studio Artistico was closed up. In 1992 it became Nebiolo Printech S.p.A. and continues to manufacture presses under that name today.
