Giovanni Battista Grillo
Giovanni Battista Grillo (late 16th-century mid-November 1622) was an Italian composer and organist. Little is known about Grillo until he was elected organist to the Venetian confraternity ' Scuola Grande di S Rocco' on 28 August 1612. This was a prominent position in the musical life of the city. Also, he was appointed the first organist of San Marco on 30 December 1619. He died in Venice. His music follows Giovanni Gabrieli, especially his ''Sacri consensus ac Symphonia'' (Venice 1618) which includes vocal canzonas up to 12 parts, using ''cori spezzati.'' He is also known for three instrumental canzonas published in Raveri's collection ''Canzoni per sonare con ogni sorte di stromenti'' (Venice, 1608). Scuola Grande Di San Rocco
The Scuola Grande di San Rocco is a building in Venice, northern Italy. It is noted for its collection of paintings by Tintoretto and generally agreed to include some of his finest work. History The building is the seat of a confraternity established in 1478, named after Saint Roch, San Rocco, popularly regarded as a protector against plague. The members of the "Confraternity of St. Roch" were a group of wealthy Venetian citizens. The site they chose for their building is next to the San Rocco, Venice, church of San Rocco which houses the remains of the saint. In January 1515 the project of the building was entrusted to Bartolomeo Bon, although some authorities assign it to his son Pietro Bon. In 1524 his work was continued by Sante Lombardo, who, in turn, three years later was replaced by Antonio Scarpagnino. Giovanni Gabrieli
Giovanni Gabrieli (c. 1554/1557 – 12 August 1612) was an Italian composer and organist. He was one of the most influential musicians of his time, and represents the culmination of the style of the Venetian School, at the time of the shift from Renaissance to Baroque idioms. Biography Gabrieli was born in Venice. He was one of five children, and his father came from the region of Carnia and went to Venice shortly before Giovanni's birth. While not much is known about Giovanni's early life, he probably studied with his uncle, the composer Andrea Gabrieli, who was employed at St Mark's Basilica from the 1560s until his death in 1585. The Venetian polychoral style was a type of music of the late Renaissance and early Baroque eras which involved spatially separate choirs singing in alternation. It represented a major stylistic shift from the prevailing polyphonic writing of the middle Renaissance, and was one of the major stylistic developments which led directly to the formation of what is now known as the Baroque style. A commonly encountered term for the separated choirs is ''chori spezzati''—literally, "broken choruses" as they were called, added the element of spatial contrast to Venetian music.
