Derby ( ) is a city and unitary authority area in Derbyshire, England. It lies on the banks of the River Derwent in the south of Derbyshire, which is in the East Midlands Region. Derbyshire County Cricket Club In 1946
Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1946 represents the first cricket season after a six-year break from first class cricket during World War II. The English club Derbyshire had been playing for seventy five years. It was their forty-second season in the County Championship and they won five matches and lost thirteen to finish fifteenth (two from bottom) in the County Championship. 1946 season On the resumption of county cricket after the second world war in 1946 the main problem affecting Derbyshire was that of finding a regular captain. The convention was that the captain be an amateur and usually no one was available for more than one year. Gilbert Hodgkinson filled the role in 1946 and they made a poor re-entry to the County Championship . Edward Gothard
Edward James Gothard OBE, MBE, TD (1 October 1904 – 17 January 1979) was an English first-class cricketer who played for Derbyshire in 1947 and 1948 and captained the side in both years. Gothard was born in Burton-on-Trent, the son of William Henry Gothard who played cricket for Staffordshire. Gothard himself represented Staffordshire in the Minor Counties Championship in 1927. He was an able rugby player but as a result of injury took to playing hockey instead. He was captain of Burton Hockey Club from 1933 to 1939. During the Second World War he played four cricket matches for Nottinghamshire in 1943. He was captain of Burton Hockey Club again from 1946 to 1947, and was a regular player for the club after the war. He played hockey for Derbyshire 30 times and was a trialist for the "Midlands". This is a list of seasons played by Derbyshire County Cricket Club in English cricket, from the club's formation in 1870. Early years 1871–1887 Derbyshire played their first matches in 1871. For the first three years their only opponents were Lancashire. When Kent joined in 1874, by a quirk of scoring which was based on games lost, they were County Champion. The club was bedevilled by financial problems, and in 1888 the sporting press decided no longer to accord them first class status. Wilderness years 1888–1893 From 1888 Derbyshire's matches were not accorded first class status. However the club continued to play first class counties and most of the players carried on with the club. Robin Buckston
Robin Henry Rowland Buckston (10 October 1908 – 16 May 1967) was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire between 1928 and 1939 and for Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) in 1929 and 1930. He captained the Derbyshire team between 1937 and 1939. Buckston was born in Kensington, the son of George Moreton Buckston who had played for and captained Derbyshire before and after World War I. He was educated at Eton and played in the Eton XI as a wicketkeeper. He first played for Derbyshire at the age of 19 in the 1928 season as wicketkeeper in a match against Lancashire, but did not play for them again until 1937. He played two matches for MCC against Wales in 1929 and 1930 and a game for the Free Foresters against the Netherlands in 1931. He became captain of Derbyshire in the 1937 season when after their Championship win in the 1936 season, the club came third in the Championship. Mickleover
Mickleover is a large suburban village of Derby, in Derbyshire, England. It is west of Derby city centre, northeast of Burton-upon-Trent, west of Nottingham city centre, southeast of Ashbourne, Derbyshire, Ashbourne and northeast of Uttoxeter. Derbyshire County Cricket Club In 1937
Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1937 was the cricket season when the English club Derbyshire had been playing for sixty six years. It was their thirty-ninth season in the County Championship and they came third after winning the Championship in 1936. 1937 season Derbyshire played 28 games in the County Championship, and one match against the touring New Zealanders. They won 15 matches including the game against the New Zealanders and lost six to finish third in the County Championship. Robin Buckston took over the captaincy having last played for the club in the 1928 season. Denis Smith was top scorer. Tommy Mitchell took most wickets but Bill Copson made a particular impression taking eight wickets for eleven runs against Warwickshire in the first innings at Derby which included four wickets with successive balls.
