Ski mountaineering (abbreviated to skimo) is a skiing discipline that involves climbing mountains either on skis or carrying them, depending on the steepness of the ascent, and then descending on skis. There are two major categories of equipment used, free-heel Telemark skis and skis based on Alpine skis, where the heel is free for ascents, but is fixed during descent. Georg Nickaes
Georg "Schorsch" Nickaes (born 12 June 1971) is a German ski mountaineer and speaker of the German ski mountaineering team. Nickaes was born in Bad Reichenhall. He enjoys also mountain running and ice climbing, and finished the army mountain guide training in 1994. He started in international ski mountaineering races after 1999. Toni Steurer
Anton "Toni" Steurer (born 1 December 1978) is a German extreme sports athlete and non-commissioned officer. Steurer was born in Oberstdorf. Having climbed the Eiger Nordwand at the age of seventeen, he is one of the youngest mountaineers to have ever done so. He is currently deployed as a medical service soldier and army mountain guide in Kempten, Germany. He is member of the DAV section Oberstaufen and part of the German skimountaineering team. Besides mountain climbing, he also practices biking, skiing and other sports. The Patrouille des Glaciers (PDG) is a ski mountaineering race organised every two years by the Swiss Armed Forces, in which military and civilian teams compete. It takes place once every two years at the end of April, in the south part of the canton of Valais below the summits of the Pennine Alps. The Patrouille des Glaciers is a stage of La Grande Course that includes the most important ski mountaineering competitions of the season. Benedikt "Bene" Böhm (born 15 August 1977 in Munich) is a German Ski mountaineering, extreme ski mountaineer and Extreme skiing, extreme skier. Together with Sebastian Haag he keeps the records in speed ski mountaineering at the Muztagata and the Gasherbrum II. Böhm has grown up with five siblings in Harlaching, a borough of Munich.
