George Washington (Bartholomew)
''George Washington'' is a statue of the George Washington, first president of the United States by the same name located in Baltimore, Maryland. Erected in 1857 in, the sculpture is located at the main entrance of Druid Hill Park. History Created by famed sculptor Edward Sheffield Bartholomew, the George Washington statue was relocated to Druid Hill Park in 1885. It was moved from old Carroll Hall building at the southwest corner of Calvert and Baltimore Streets. In June 2020, the historic statue was defaced with red paint and vandalized with graffiti in response to the murder of George Floyd. Edward Sheffield Bartholomew
Edward Sheffield Bartholomew (1822 - May 2, 1858) was a noted American sculptor active in Italy. Bartholomew was born in Colchester, Connecticut. After apprenticeships as a bookbinder and dentist, his first employment was as a dentist in Hartford, but he soon abandoned it for painting and (after learning that he was color-blind) sculpture. In 1844 he studied at the National Academy of Design's antique class in New York City, from 1845-1848 directed the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, contracting a severe case of smallpox circa 1847, then studied for another year in the National Academy of Design and sailed for Europe. From 1851 onwards he lived in Rome and died in Naples of bronchitis. Bartholomew is known for his bas reliefs, marble busts and statues, and medallions in the neo-classical style. George Washington (February 22, 1732, 1799) was an American military officer, statesman, and Founding Father who served as the first president of the United States from 1789 to 1797. On , George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, was murdered in the U.S. city of Minneapolis by Derek Chauvin, a 44-year-old white police officer. Floyd had been arrested on suspicion of using a counterfeit $20 bill. Chauvin knelt on Floyd's neck for over nine minutes while Floyd was handcuffed and lying face-down in a street.
