George Thom
George Thom (1842–1916) was a Scottish mathematician and pedagogue who was principal at Dollar Academy from 1878 to 1902. Life and work Thom graduated from the University of Aberdeen in 1863. In 1867 he became Principal of Doveton College in Madras, India and he remained there till 1876, when he returned to Scotland as Vice-Principal of Chanonry School Aberdeen. In 1878 he was appointed Rector of Dollar Institution (later to become Dollar Academy). He held this post for 24 years, till his retirement in 1902. He was a founder member of the Edinburgh Mathematical Society in 1883 and became its fifth President in 1886. A mathematician is someone who uses an extensive knowledge of mathematics in their work, typically to solve mathematical problems. The Edinburgh Mathematical Society is a mathematical society for academics in Scotland. History The Society was founded in 1883 by a group of Edinburgh school teachers and academics, on the initiative of Alexander Yule Fraser FRSE and Andrew Jeffrey Gunion Barclay FRSE, both maths teachers at George Watson's College, and Cargill Gilston Knott, the assistant of Peter Guthrie Tait, professor of physics at the University of Edinburgh. Huntly
Huntly ( gd, Srath Bhalgaidh or ''Hunndaidh'') is a town in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, formerly known as Milton of Strathbogie or simply Strathbogie. Dollar Academy, founded in 1818 by John McNabb, is an independent co-educational day and boarding school in Scotland. The open campus occupies a site in the centre of Dollar, Clackmannanshire, at the foot of the Ochil Hills.
