George H. Hobson
George H. "Hoss" Hobson (May 4, 1908 – November 19, 2001) was an American athlete and sports coach. After playing college football for Alabama State, Hobson began a coaching career at several high schools, leading his teams to four state championships. In c. 1941, he began his tenure at Alabama A&M University, for which he was best known. He served as head football coach from 1942 to 1959, and was also the athletic director for many years. In the latter position, he revived the school's baseball team and added the sports of basketball, tennis, and golf, serving as the head coach of each for a time. Hobson later served as commissioner of the SIAC and was inducted into both the NACDA and Alabama A&M Halls of Fame. Early life and education Hobson was born on May 4, 1908.Ancestry.com. Alabama Tribune
The ''Alabama Tribune'' was a newspaper published in Montgomery, Alabama in the US. According to the Library of Congress' website it was established in the 1930s and ceased publication in the 1960s. Newspapers.com has archives of the paper from 1946 to 1964. The paper had a tagline of "Clean - Constructive - Conservative", and promoted itself with the line "Covers Alabama Like the Dew". It reported on a legal case challenging racial segregation at the University of Alabama. It reported on Montgomery bus boycott activities, the NAACP being ruled "foreign", and on Martin Luther King Jr.'s organizing. On October 31, 1958 the paper reported on Martin Luther King Jr.'s return to Montgomery. Editor Jackson wrote about wanting "first come, first served" treatment on buses. Louis C. Crews (c. 1918 – January 20, 2005) was an American athlete and sports coach. He was best known for his time as head American football, football coach at Alabama A&M University, a position he held from 1960 to 1975. He also was head baseball and women's basketball coach at Alcorn Agricultural and Mechanical College (now known as Alcorn State University), head baseball coach at Alabama A&M, and served as head football and men's basketball coach at Jarvis Christian University, Jarvis Christian College. He is the all-time winningest head coach of the Alabama A&M Bulldogs football program. The team plays home games at Louis Crews Stadium, named in his honor. Dyke Smith
Frank Donald "Dyke" Smith (March 17, 1912 – April 16, 1986) was an American football player and coach. After playing two sports in college for Morris Brown, Smith coached a team in Georgia from 1937 to 1938, Cobb High School in 1939, Edward Waters University in 1940, Alabama A&M University in 1941, and Delaware State University (then Delaware State College) in 1942. Early life and education Smith was born on March 17, 1912, in Cook County, Illinois and grew up in Evanston. He attended Morris Brown College from 1932 to 1936, playing football and basketball. In football, he was the school's starting quarterback, and was named an All-America selection by most black newspapers.
