George Drever
George Drever (31 March 1910 – 1996) was a Scottish communist and volunteer with the International Brigades in the Spanish Civil War. Early life, education, work, communism Drever was born on 31 March 1910 in Leith, one of eleven children of an Orcadians, Orcadian couple, dock labourer George Drever and his wife Louisa née Balfour. He lived at 41, Ferry Road, Leith was schooled at Leith Academy and passed Higher (Scottish), Scottish Highers in English, Maths, Science (Chemistry & Physics) and became Dux in 1928. International Brigades
The International Brigades ( es, Brigadas Internacionales) were military units set up by the Communist International to assist the Popular Front government of the Second Spanish Republic during the Spanish Civil War. The organization existed for two years, from 1936 until 1938. It is estimated that during the entire war, between 40,000 and 59,000 members served in the International Brigades, including some 10,000 who died in combat. Beyond the Spanish Civil War, "International Brigades" is also sometimes used interchangeably with the term foreign legion in reference to military units comprising foreigners who volunteer to fight in the military of another state, often in times of war. The headquarters of the brigade was located at the Gran Hotel, Albacete, Castilla-La Mancha. Gestapo
The (), abbreviated Gestapo (; ), was the official secret police of Nazi Germany and in German-occupied Europe. The force was created by Hermann Göring in 1933 by combining the various political police agencies of Prussia into one organisation. On 20 April 1934, oversight of the Gestapo passed to the head of the ''Schutzstaffel'' (SS), Heinrich Himmler, who was also appointed Chief of German Police by Hitler in 1936. Instead of being exclusively a Prussian state agency, the Gestapo became a national one as a sub-office of the (SiPo; Security Police). Newhaven, Edinburgh
Newhaven is a district in the City of Edinburgh, Scotland, between Leith and Granton and about north of the city centre, just north of the Victoria Park district. Formerly a village and harbour on the Firth of Forth, it had a population of approximately 5,000 inhabitants at the 1991 census. Newhaven was designated a conservation area, one of 40 such areas in Edinburgh, in 1977. It has a very distinctive building form, typical of many Scottish fishing villages, with a "forestair" leading to accommodation at first floor level. The lower ground floor was used for storing nets. More modern housing dating from the 1960s has replicated the style of these older buildings. Jimmy Rutherford (International Brigades)
James Rutherford (20 November 1917 – 24 May 1938) was a Scottish communist and volunteer with the International Brigades, who was captured and expelled from Spain in 1937, but returned to fight against fascism, and was executed in the Spanish Civil War. Background Rutherford was born on 20 November 1917 and brought up in the close-knit fishing village of Newhaven on Forth, at 9 Ann Street (near Leith, Edinburgh) where he lived with his grandmother, a Newhaven fishwife who had carried a heavy creel on her back to sell the catch. His father and other family members were active among the 400 year old Society of the Free Fishermen of Newhaven. He worked for Free Fisherman convenor, David Dryburgh, a trawlerman, and Labour party parliamentary candidate, who said of Rutherford that as well as being cheerful, he was 'a keen student of social and economic conditions'. Belchite
Belchite is a municipality and town in the province of Zaragoza, Spain, about 40 km southeast of Zaragoza. It is the capital of Campo de Belchite ''comarca'' (administrative region) and is located in a plain surrounded by low hills, the highest of which is Lobo. The surrounding area is one of the most arid places of Aragon. In 1122 Alfonso the Battler founded the Confraternity of Belchite to defend the frontier between the Christian kingdoms and al-Andalus.
