Garvey and O'Garvey are Irish surnames, derived from the Gaelic ''Ó Gairbhith'', also spelt ''Ó Gairbheith'', meaning "descendant of Gairbhith". ''Gairbhith'' itself means "rough peace". Amy Euphemia Jacques Garvey (31 December 1895 – 25 July 1973) was a Jamaican-born journalist and activist. She was the second wife of Marcus Garvey. Amy Ashwood Garvey (''née'' Ashwood; 10 January 1897 – 3 May 1969) was a Jamaican Pan-Africanist activist. She was a director of the Black Star Line Steamship Corporation, and along with her former husband Marcus Garvey she founded the ''Negro World'' newspaper. Early years Amy Ashwood was born in Port Antonio, Jamaica, on 10 January 1897, the only daughter of the three children of businessman Michael Delbert Ashwood and his wife, Maudriana Thompson. Edward R. Garvey (April 18, 1940 – February 22, 2017) was an American lawyer, politician and activist. Background Garvey graduated from the University of Wisconsin (now the University of Wisconsin–Madison) and spent two years in the U.S. Army; he then returned to Madison and entered the University of Wisconsin Law School, where he earned a law degree. Law and union work Soon after graduation, Garvey joined Lindquist & Vennum, a Minneapolis law firm. Bruce Noble Garvey (c. 1939 – 1 August 2010) was a British-born Canadian journalist and editor. Born in London, England, Garvey moved to Ontario, Canada at age 19 and worked at various newspapers such as the ''Stratford Beacon-Herald''. Brian Garvey (born September 18, 1961) is a comic book artist, known primarily for inking. Along with his inking partner, Ian Akin, Garvey worked on many superhero comics (mostly for Marvel Comics) from 1982–1988. Dan Edward Garvey (June 19, 1886 – February 5, 1974) was an American businessman, politician and the ninth secretary of state of Arizona from 1942 to 1948 under Sidney Preston Osborn and the eighth governor of Arizona from 1948 to 1951. He was the first of many people to ascend to the office of Governor from the Secretaryship.
