Garth McGimpsey
Garth McGimpsey (born 17 July 1955) is an amateur golfer from Bangor, Northern Ireland. Playing career McGimpsey won The Amateur Championship in 1985. He beat Graham Homewood, England, 8 and 7 in the final at Royal Dornoch Golf Club, Sutherland, Scotland. His win gave an invitation to the Masters in 1986 and 1987 but he failed to make the cut on either occasion. He also played in The Open Championship in 1985 and 1986 but failed to make the cut. He was part of the winning Great Britain and Ireland team at the 1988 Eisenhower Trophy and the winning Ireland teams at the 1983 and 1987 European Amateur Team Championship. He represented the combined Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland team at ten consecutive European Amateur Team Championships. McGimpsey was the Irish long driving champion in 1977 and the United Kingdom long driving champion in 1979. Bangor, County Down
Bangor ( ; ) is a city and seaside resort in County Down, Northern Ireland, on the southern side of Belfast Lough. The 1991 European Amateur Team Championship took place 26–30 June at Real Club de la Puerta de Hierro in Madrid, Spain. It was the 17th men's golf European Amateur Team Championship. Venue The hosting club was established in 1895 as a polo club. Its first 18-hole golf course, located in the northwest of Madrid, Spain, in the district of Moncloa, 5 kilometres from the city center, designed by Harry Colt, opened in 1914. Walker Cup
The Walker Cup is a golf trophy contested in odd-numbered years by leading male amateur golfers in two teams: United States, and Great Britain and Ireland. The official name is the Walker Cup Match (not "Matches" as in Ryder Cup Matches). It is organised by The R&A and the United States Golf Association (USGA). In 1921 the Royal Liverpool Golf Club hosted an unofficial contest which was followed by official annual contests from 1922 through 1924. From 1925 they became biennial, held on even-number years. After World War II they switched to odd-numbered years. They are held alternately in the U.S., and Ireland or Britain. The cup is named after George Herbert Walker who was president of the USGA in 1920 when the match was initiated. Walker is the grandfather and namesake of George H. W. 2005 Walker Cup
The 40th Walker Cup Match was played on August 13 and 14, 2005 at the Chicago Golf Club in Wheaton, Illinois, United States. Team United States won 12½ to 11½. Format The format for play on Saturday and Sunday are the same. There are four matches of foursomes in the morning and eight singles matches in the afternoon. In all, 24 matches are played. Each of the 24 matches is worth one point in the larger team competition. If a match is all square after the 18th hole extra holes are not played. Rather, each side earns ½ a point toward their team total. The team that accumulates at least 12½ points wins the competition.
