''Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo'' is a Japanese anime television series produced by Gonzo. An adaptation of the 1844 novel ''The Count of Monte Cristo'' by Alexandre Dumas, the 24-episode series aired on Japanese television between October 2004 and March 2005; it was licensed for a Western release first by Geneon Entertainment and later by Funimation. The series was adapted into a CD drama, a trilogy of novels by screenwriter Shuichi Kouyama, and a manga written and drawn by series creator Mahiro Maeda which ran from 2005 to 2008. The series was praised by critics and received many accolades. Jean-Jacques Burnel (born 21 February 1952) is an English musician, producer and songwriter, best known as the bass guitarist and co-lead vocalist with the English rock band The Stranglers. Mahiro Maeda (前田 真宏 ''Maeda Mahiro''; born March 14, 1963) is a Japanese anime director, character designer, and animator. Helen McCarthy in ''500 Essential Anime Movies'' called him "one of the most imaginative visualists in anime". He also worked on Concept Art and Design for '' Mad Max: Fury Road'' (2015), which won six Academy Awards.
