Galway Senior Hurling Club Championship
The Galway Senior Hurling Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the Brooks Galway Senior Hurling Championship) is an annual hurling competition organised by the Galway County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association since 1887 for the top hurling teams in the county of Galway in Ireland. The series of games are played during the summer and autumn months with the county final currently being played at Pearse Stadium in November. Initially played as a knock-out competition, the championship currently consists of a group stage followed by a knock-out series of games. The Galway County Championship is an integral part of the wider All-Ireland Senior Club Hurling Championship. The winners of the Galway county final automatically represent Connacht and join the champions of the other three provinces to contest the All-Ireland Championship. 2022 Galway Senior Hurling Championship
The 2022 Galway Senior Hurling Championship was the 125th staging of the Galway Senior Hurling Championship since its establishment in 1887. St Thomas' won their fifth consecutive title in a row after defeating Loughrea in a replay at Pearse Stadium on 27 November. Moycullen participated in the senior championship having beaten Killimor in the 2021 Galway Intermediate Hurling Championship. The competition was sponsored by Brooks for the third of a 3-year partnership that started in 2020. Tynagh-Abbey/Duniry were relegated, losing the relegation playoff to Ahascragh-Fohenagh and will play in the 2023 Galway Intermediate Hurling Championship. The ''United Irishman'' was a nationalist weekly newspaper published by John Mitchel in Dublin in 1848. It was suppressed by the British Government the same year. History From 1845, John Mitchel had been invited by Charles Gavan Duffy, co-founder and first editor of ''The Nation'' (a paper supporting Daniel O'Connell's Repeal Association) to write for that paper. He became part of the Young Ireland movement and after the schism in the Repeal Association, he formed the Irish Confederation, with Thomas Reilly, William O'Brien and led by Thomas Meagher. Dissatisfied with his lot at ''The Nation'', he favoured a more "vigorous policy against the English government" and resigned in 1847. From his office at 12 Trinity Street, Dublin, he printed and published the first issue of the ''United Irishman'' on 12 February 1848. Liam Mellows GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club located in Renmore, a suburb of Galway (city), Galway City, Republic of Ireland, Ireland. Sarsfields Galway is a GAA club consisting of the parish of Bullaun, New Inn and Woodlawn in East County Galway, Ireland. Winners of two All-Ireland Senior Club Hurling Championship's. The club was founded in 1966 and is almost exclusively concerned with the game of hurling. And in 2016 Sarsfields Hurling Club celebrated its 50th year. Mattie Murphy
Matthew "Mattie" Murphy is an Irish former hurling manager and former player. Though he was manager of the Galway senior hurling team on two occasions, was as manager of the Galway minor team that he experienced his greatest success in terms of major titles won. Born in Turloughmore, County Galway, Murphy was introduced to hurling in his youth. After coming to prominence at underage levels with the Turloughmore club, he later transferred to Gort. A two-time Connacht medal winner with the Gort senior team, Murphy also won two county senior championship medals. Murphy has been involved at coaching at all levels at club and inter-county for four decades. Between 1992 and 2013 he became the most successful manager in the history of the All-Ireland Minor Championship after guiding Galway to six All-Ireland titles. Portumna GAA
Portumna GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club located in the town of Portumna in County Galway. The club is almost exclusively centred on hurling. History The first mention of Portumna in terms of Gaelic games comes in 1888 with regard to a junior Gaelic football game against Eyrecourt. The club remained in the background of senior club hurling until 1995 when Portumna contested their first county final. Victory on that occasion went to Sarsfield's. The 2000s saw a golden age for the club as it contested seven consecutive county finals between 2003 and 2009. Victory was achieved in 2003, 2005, 2007, 2008 and 2009. In Gaelic games, a manager or (in Irish) ''bainisteoir'' is involved in the direction and instruction of the on-field operations of a team. The role entails the application of sport tactics and strategies during the game itself, and usually entails substitution of players and other such actions as needed. Micheál Donoghue
Micheál Donoghue (born 7 September 1974) is an Irish hurling manager and former player. He has been manager of the Dublin senior hurling team since August 2022. Donoghue was previously manager of the Galway senior hurling team from the end of 2015 until the summer of 2019. Donoghue began his hurling career at club level with Clarinbridge. After breaking onto the club's top adult team he enjoyed his greatest success almost a decade later when he captained the club to the 2001 Galway Senior Championship. At inter-county level, Donoghue, along with his twin brother Liam, was part of the successful Galway minor team that won the All-Ireland Championship in 1992 before later winning an All-Ireland Championship with the under-21 team in 1993. He also joined the Galway senior team in 1993. Salthill
Salthill () is a seaside area in the City of Galway in the west of Ireland. Lying within the townland of Lenaboy (''an Léana Buí''), it attracts many tourists all year round. There is a 2 km long promenade, locally known as ''the Prom'', overlooking Galway Bay with bars, restaurants and hotels.
