Gaelic Athletic Association
The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA; ga, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael ; CLG) is an Irish international amateur sporting and cultural organisation, focused primarily on promoting indigenous Gaelic games and pastimes, which include the traditional Irish sports of hurling, camogie, Gaelic football, Gaelic handball and rounders. Ardrahan
Ardrahan () is a village in County Galway, Ireland. History Richard de Burgo conquered Galway in 1236, and granted the land to Maurice Fitzgerald who built the castle whose ruins still stand today. The churchyard wall contains the remains of a round tower, which suggests that a monastic community may have existed on the site before the castle was built. Places of interest The most noteworthy attraction in Ardrahan is Tulira Castle, once owned by playwright and independence activist Edward Martyn. Tulira Castle was for a long time owned by Galway County Council, but was bought in 2015 by CarTrawler owner Niall Turley for €5.8 million. The church at Labane, Ardrahan, which was the parish church of Joe Roche, has several stained glass windows by Alfred E. Child, Ethel Rhind and Michael Healy. Hurling
Hurling ( ga, iománaíocht, ') is an outdoor team game of ancient Gaelic Irish origin, played by men. One of Ireland's native Gaelic games, it shares a number of features with Gaelic football, such as the field and goals, the number of players and much terminology. The same game played by women is called camogie ('), which shares a common Gaelic root. The objective of the game is for players to use an ash wood stick called a hurley (in Irish a ', pronounced or ) to hit a small ball called a ' between the opponent's goalposts either over the crossbar for one point or under the crossbar into a net guarded by a goalkeeper for three points. Connacht Senior Club Hurling Championship
The Connacht Senior Club Hurling Championship was an annual hurling tournament played between the senior hurling clubs in Connacht contested from 1970 until 2007 when it was discontinued due to a lack of meaningful opposition for the Galway champions. The Galway champions now qualify directly for the All-Ireland Senior Club Hurling Championship semi-final. Throughout the competition's existence the Galway champions automatically qualified for the final. In 2007, the competition's final year, this competition was won by Portumna from Galway. The Galway Senior Hurling Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the Brooks Galway Senior Hurling Championship) is an annual hurling competition organised by the Galway County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association since 1887 for the top hurling teams in the county of Galway in Ireland. The series of games are played during the summer and autumn months with the county final currently being played at Pearse Stadium in November. The Galway Intermediate Hurling Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the Galmont Hotel Intermediate Hurling Championship and abbreviated to the Galway IHC) is an annual hurling competition organised by the Galway County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association and contested by the top-ranking intermediate clubs in the county of Galway in Ireland. It is the second tier overall in the entire Galway hurling championship system. The Galway Intermediate Championship was introduced in 1949 as a competition that would bridge the gap between the senior grade and the junior grade. In its current format, the Galway Intermediate Championship begins in April. The 14 participating teams are drawn into two groups of seven teams and play each other in a round-robin system. Bernie Forde
Bernie Forde (born 5 November 1957) is an Irish retired hurler who played as a right corner-forward for the Galway senior team. Born in Ardrahan, County Galway, Forde first played competitive hurling in his youth. He made his first impression on the inter-county scene when he joined the Galway under-21 team. He made his senior debut during the 1978 championship. Forde went on to play a key role for Galway for the next few years, and won one All-Ireland medal. He was an All-Ireland runner-up on three occasions. As a member of the Connacht inter-provincial team at various times throughout his career, Forde won two Railway Cup medals. At club level he is a three-time Connacht medallist with Ardrahan. In addition to this he has also won three championship medals. Throughout his career Forde made 17 championship appearances for Galway. His retirement came following the conclusion of the 1985 championship. Iarla Tannian
Iarla Tannian (born 12 April 1984) is an Irish hurler who currently plays at centre back for the Galway senior team. Tannian made his first appearance for the senior team during the 2007 National Hurling League and immediately became a regular member of the starting fifteen. Since then he has won one Leinster winners' medal and one National Hurling League winners' medal. He was named as the Man of the match by ''The Sunday Game'' panel in the drawn 2012 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Final on 9 September. Jonathan Glynn
Jonathan Glynn (born 7 June 1993) is an Irish hurler who played as a forward for the Galway senior team. Glynn made his first appearance for the senior team during the 2012 championship and was part of the Galway panel until his retirement in 2020 at the age of 26. He was a key member of Galway's 2017 All Ireland winning side. Also, an All-Ireland medalist in the minor grade, Glynn has won one Leinster medal in the senior grade. At club level, Glynn played with the Ardrahan club. Career Glynn missed all of the 2016 season but returned to the Galway panel in April 2017 after returning from New York City where he played football for New York.
