Galway Intermediate Hurling Championship
The Galway Intermediate Hurling Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the Galmont Hotel Intermediate Hurling Championship and abbreviated to the Galway IHC) is an annual hurling competition organised by the Galway County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association and contested by the top-ranking intermediate clubs in the county of Galway in Ireland. It is the second tier overall in the entire Galway hurling championship system. The Galway Intermediate Championship was introduced in 1949 as a competition that would bridge the gap between the senior grade and the junior grade. In its current format, the Galway Intermediate Championship begins in April. The 14 participating teams are drawn into two groups of seven teams and play each other in a round-robin system. The four top-ranking teams in both groups proceed to the knockout phase that culminates with the final match at Kenny Park in October. Hurling
Hurling ( ga, iománaíocht, ') is an outdoor team game of ancient Gaelic Irish origin, played by men. One of Ireland's native Gaelic games, it shares a number of features with Gaelic football, such as the field and goals, the number of players and much terminology. The same game played by women is called camogie ('), which shares a common Gaelic root. The objective of the game is for players to use an ash wood stick called a hurley (in Irish a ', pronounced or ) to hit a small ball called a ' between the opponent's goalposts either over the crossbar for one point or under the crossbar into a net guarded by a goalkeeper for three points. Gearóid McInerney
Gearóid McInerney (born 24 September 1990) is an Irish hurler who currently plays as a centre-back for the Galway senior team. Born in Oranmore, County Galway, McInerney was born into a strong hurling family. His father, Gerry McInerney, was a Galway player and won back-to-back All-Ireland medals in 1987 and 1988. McInerney first played competitive hurling during his schooling at the Oranmore boys national school where he won 2 A county titles in hurling and football. He later played more hurling for Calasanctius College. He simultaneously came to prominence at juvenile and underage levels with the Ornamore-Maree club, before eventually joining the club's top team. The GAA Hurling All-Ireland Senior Championship, known simply as the All-Ireland Championship, is an annual inter-county hurling competition organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). It is the highest inter-county hurling competition in Ireland, and has been contested every year except one since 1887. The final, currently held on the third Sunday in August, is the culmination of a series of games played during July and August, with the winning team receiving the Liam MacCarthy Cup. Abbeyknockmoy GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club located in Abbeyknockmoy, County Galway, Republic of Ireland, Ireland and is almost exclusively concerned with the game of hurling. Oranmore-Maree GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club located in the town of Oranmore and surrounding area of Maree, County Galway, Ireland. The club was founded in 1967 and fields teams in both Gaelic football and hurling. The club was formed through a county by-law which ruled that there should be only one team per parish, previous to this Oranmore and Maree had teams. Meelick-Eyrecourt is a Gaelic Athletic Association club in the east of County Galway, Ireland, History Meelick-Eyrecourt GAA club was founded in Meelick in the 1880s, and contested the first all-Ireland hurling final in 1887. It borders with Killimor , Portumna and Kiltormer GAA clubs in Galway and St. Rynaghs in Banagher Co. Offaly.
