Florence (album)
''Florence'' is the thirteenth solo studio album by British singer/songwriter Darren Hayman. It was released by Fika Recordings on 6 November 2015. Background ''Florence'' is Hayman's first solo album not to feature any other guest musicians. It is named after the Italian city of Florence where the album was written and recorded by Hayman whilst on holiday. Hayman was visiting Elizabeth Morris of Allo Darlin' and Ola Innset of Making Marks and recorded the album in their apartment. ''Florence'' was released on vinyl and via digital download. Critical reception On the ''Metacritic'' website, which aggregates reviews from critics and assigns a normalised rating out of 100, ''Florence'' received a score of 74, based on 2 mixed and 4 positive reviews. ''Record Collector'' write that "Hayman’s lyrics, vocals and musicianship add up to a frequently touching whole" but feel that most of the songs are "full of potential" rather than being the finished article. Darren Hayman
Darren Hayman (born 1 December 1970) is an English singer-songwriter and guitarist. He is best known as the writer, lead singer, and guitarist in Hefner. Since Hefner disbanded in 2002, Hayman has embarked on a prolific solo career releasing twelve albums under his own name and appearing on albums by Papernut Cambridge, Rotifer and The Great Electric. He has regularly worked with The Wave Pictures, producing an album for them, directing three of their music videos and briefly employing them as his backing band. In January 2011 Hayman recorded and released a song every day in the month of January, working with many collaborators. Hayman also paints and has exhibited his work at exhibitions about animals in space and racing dogs. Indie rock is a Music subgenre, subgenre of rock music that originated in the United States, United Kingdom and New Zealand from the 1970s to the 1980s. Originally used to describe independent record labels, the term became associated with the music they produced and was initially used interchangeably with alternative rock or "Pop rock, guitar pop rock". One of the primary scenes of the movement was Dunedin, where Dunedin sound, a cultural scene based around a convergence of noise pop and jangle became popular among the city's University of Otago, large student population. ''Chants for Socialists'' is the eleventh solo studio album by English singer/songwriter Darren Hayman. It was released by WIAIWYA (Where It's At is Where You Are) Records on 2 February 2015. Background ''Chants for Socialists'' is an album based on the 19th century protest poetry of "Victorian polymath" William Morris. Hayman found a copy of Morris' ''Chants For Socialists'' pamphlet in the William Morris Gallery and decided to set it to music, stating to ''The Quietus'': "I loved how immediate and divisive it seemed. And I liked the idea of seeing it in a record shop. It seemed to set an agenda. And it reminded me of that time when I started buying records." The album was recorded in situ at three of Morris' houses, the William Morris Gallery, Kelmscott House and Kelmscott Manor; Hayman playing Morris' piano on "The March of the Workers". Allo Darlin'
Allo Darlin' are an indie pop band based in London. Their self-titled debut album was released on the Fortuna Pop! label in 2010, with a second album, ''Europe'', appearing in 2012. A third album, ''We Come from the Same Place'', was released in autumn 2014. History Allo Darlin' was started as a solo project by Australian singer and songwriter Elizabeth Morris whilst living in London, England. The band name came from her time working in Soho. "I used to work near the market sellers," she said. "Every day I'd walk past and the old guys would yell out "Allo darlin'" as they ashed into their fruit bowls." Metacritic is a website that review aggregator, aggregates reviews of films, TV shows, music albums, video games and formerly, books. For each product, the scores from each review are averaged (a weighted arithmetic mean, weighted average). Metacritic was created by Jason Dietz, Marc Doyle, and Julie Doyle Roberts in 1999. The site provides an excerpt from each review and hyperlinks to its source. A color of green, yellow or red summarizes the critics' recommendations. It is regarded as the foremost online review aggregation site for the video game industry. Metacritic's scoring converts each review into a percentage, either mathematically from the mark given, or what the site decides subjectively from a qualitative review.
