Flag Of The Federation Of Rhodesia And Nyasaland
The flag of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland was a defaced Blue Ensign. Centred in the fly of the flag was a depiction of the shield from the Federation's coat of arms. The rising sun is taken from the colonial arms of Nyasaland (now Malawi), the lion passant is taken from the arms of Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), and the black and white wavy lines is taken from the arms of Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia). In this form, it shows the Federation of all three British colonies which lasted from 1953 to 1963. This flag flew alongside the Union Jack for the duration of the existence of the Federation. Coat Of Arms Of Northern Rhodesia
The coat of arms of Zambia was adopted on 24 October 1964 when the Republic of Zambia reached its independence. This coat of arms is adapted from the arms of the British protectorate of Northern Rhodesia which dated to 1927, with the wavy black and white vertical lines as the field and the eagle (then holding a fish) in the chief. The African fish eagle represents the conquest of freedom and nation's hope for the future. The hoe and pickaxe represent the country's economic backbone: agriculture and mining, as well as the characteristics that have influenced Zambia's evolution and nature. The Historical flags of the British Empire and the overseas territories refers to the various flags that were used across the various Dominions, Crown colonies, protectorates, territories which made up the British Empire and current overseas territories. Early flags that were used across the Empire (In particular the then Thirteen Colonies which would later become the United States of America) tended to variations of the Red and Blue Ensigns of Great Britain with no colonial badges or coat of arms attached to them. Flags of the World (abbreviated FOTW or FotW) is an Internet-based vexillological association and resource. Its principal project is the Internet's largest website devoted to vexillology, containing comprehensive information about various flags, and an associated mailing list. The mailing list began as a discussion group in about September 1993, while the website was founded by Giuseppe Bottasini in late 1994, and Rob Raeside took over as director in 1998. Flags of the World became the 56th member of the FIAV in 2001.
