First Descents
First Descents (FD) is a charitable non-profit organization headquartered in Denver, Colorado. First Descents provides outdoor adventures for young adults impacted by cancer and other serious health conditions. Brad Ludden, a professional kayaker, founded First Descents in 2001. First Descents has served nearly 10,000 young adult survivors at over 1,000 programs nationwide. It has established relationships with more than 450 medical centers nationwide to reach patients. Beginning in 2020, First Descents expanded programming to serve healthcare professionals on the frontlines of COVID-19. First Descents has been recognized by CNN Heroes and ''Outside'' magazine’s Best Places to Work. How it works First Descents provides week-long and multi-day programs nationwide. Brad Ludden
Brad Ludden is a professional kayaker born in Sheridan, Wyoming on May 8, 1981. He started kayaking internationally at the age of twelve. His career has taken him to more than forty countries. Ludden is the founder of a charity called First Descents, an organization that benefits cancer patients. At age 12, Brad learned his aunt was diagnosed with cancer, and shortly after his mother began volunteer work at a local pediatric oncology camp. He volunteered one day each summer, instructing campers on kayaking. This is when he realized he could serve his community while kayaking. In 1999 he began construction of First Descents and in 2001, construction was finished, with aid from The State of Colorado. In 2008 he was named Cosmopolitan Magazine's "Hottest Bachelor in America." Ludden's has also started a blog known as Athletes Givinwhere he highlights athletes involved in charitable work. Kayaking
Kayaking is the use of a kayak for moving over water. It is distinguished from canoeing by the sitting position of the paddler and the number of blades on the paddle. ''CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute'' is a television special created by CNN to honor individuals who make extraordinary contributions to humanitarian aid and make a difference in their communities. The program was started in 2007. Since 2016, the program was hosted by Anderson Cooper and Kelly Ripa.
