Youssef Chahine ( ar, يوسف شاهين ; 25 January 1926 – 27 July 2008) was an Egyptian film director. He was active in the Egyptian film industry from 1950 until his death. He directed twelve films that were listed in the Top 100 Egyptian films list. A winner of the Cannes 50th Anniversary Award (for lifetime achievement). Youssef Chahine is credited for directing five films starring Salah Zulfikar including significant productions such as ''Saladin'' (1963), ''The Nile and the Life'' (1968) and ''Those People of the Nile'' (1972) and also credited with discovering Omar Sharif, whose first starring role was in Chahine's film '' The Blazing Sun'' (1954). A well-regarded director with critics, he was often present at film festivals during the earlier decades of his work. ''Jamila, the Algerian'' is a 1958 Egyptian historical film about one of the most important figures in the history of Algeria, Djamila Bouhired. The film was produced by Youssef Chahine and written by Abd al-Rahman, Ali al-Zarqani, and Naguib Mahfouz. The film is regarded as not only highlighting the story of an important female revolutionary, but also showing the struggle of the Algerian people against the French occupation. The film stars Magda, Salah Zulfikar and Ahmed Mazhar in the leading roles. ''Jamila, the Algerian'' is the first and only multimedia narrative to focus solely on the role of Algerian women in the 1954 revolution. ''The Emigrant'' ( ar, المهاجر, translit. Al Mohager) is a 1994 Egyptian film by Youssef Chahine. The film is listed in the Top 100 Egyptian films. The release of this film, which is loosely based on the story of the Biblical Joseph, raised a storm of protest, since Islam forbids the visual representation of religious figures. This was despite the fact that Chahine changed the names of all of the characters and stripped the story of all its supernatural and miraculous elements. Joseph becomes Ram, Jacob becomes Adam, Potiphar becomes Amihar, and Potiphar's wife, unnamed in the Bible, becomes Simihit, the high priestess of the Cult of Amun. Plot The film is essentially a fictional biography of a self-centred, chain-smoking, highly-strung, radical realist film-maker named Yehia Choukry Mourad. It opens with him having a heart attack while directing a film. He is convinced to go to London for diagnosis and, subsequently, a heart bypass. The day before the operation, he spends time with his chauffeur. The film was daring for implying a homosexual attraction between the two men.
