The Federal District Football Association (FDFA) was first established in 1897 at a meeting at Gedye's Victoria Hotel, Cobram, Victoria for the purpose of controlling the "Cobram Courier Cup" Australian rules football competition. History Football teams that competed in the FDFA during its six-year history were from the following local towns in Northern Victoria – Cobram, Katamatite, Katunga, Muckatah, Strathmerton, Yarrowayah and Southern Riverina, New South Wales teams were – Barooga, Finley and Tocumwal. This football competition only ran for six seasons from 1897 to 1902. Cobram
Cobram is a town in the Australian state of Victoria. It is on the Murray River which forms the border between Victoria and New South Wales. Cobram along with the nearby towns of Numurkah and Yarrawonga is part of Shire of Moira and is the administrative centre of the council. Its twin town of Barooga is located on the north side of the Murray River. Surrounding Cobram are a number of orchards, dairy farms and wineries. At the 2016 census, Cobram had a population of 6,014. History ''The Cobram Courier'' was published from 12 September 1888 to 28 December 1995, by Victoria Heller & Marston, Cobram. Australian Rules Football
Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Points are scored by kicking the oval ball between the central goal posts (worth six points), or between a central and outer post (worth one point, otherwise known as a "behind"). During general play, players may position themselves anywhere on the field and use any part of their bodies to move the ball. The primary methods are kicking, handballing and running with the ball. Cobram Football Club
The Cobram Football Club, nicknamed the ''Tigers'', is an Australian rules football and netball club based in the regional city of Cobram located in north east Victoria. Cobram teams currently compete in the Murray FNL. History Formed in 1887, Cobram began in the Goulburn Valley Football Association(GVFA) in 1888. The club also had short stints in the Murray Border Football Association and Federal District Football Association. Cobram FC also won two additional premierships in 1892 and 1893 as per a letter to the ''Cobram Courier'' by former player, Jack McNamara in 1903, who wrote that he had possession of the actual "Gedye's Victoria Hotel Cup" premiership cups. In 1911, the GVFA's southernmost clubs voted against the entry of Cobram due to what was deemed as excessive travel. Cobram then went into recess in 1911, before returning to the GVFA in 1912. Katamatite Football Club
The Katamatite Football Netball Club, nicknamed the ''Tigers'', is an Australian rules football and netball club based in the small Victorian town of Katamatite. The club teams currently compete in the Picola & District League. History Katamatite's first documented match dates back to June, 1891, when the local team travelled to Dookie and were soundly beaten. In 1892 and 1893 they played in the Geyde's Victoria Hotel (Cobram) Trophy competition. In 1894 and 1895, Katamatite played some friendly matches against other local towns, after their application to join the Goulburn Valley Football Association was rejected. During the mid 1890s, it appears that the local Katamatite footballers, played with the Muckatah Football Club and played some of their home games on the Katamatite ground too. Katunga Football Club
The Katunga Football Netball Club, nicknamed the ''Swans'', is an Australian rules football and netball club playing in the Picola & District Football League. Katunga Football Club joined the Picola & District Football League in 1951 and has called the league its home ever since. The club is based in the small Victorian town of Katunga. The league split into two divisions in 2009 which placed Katunga in the South East Division. They still compete against close rivals Waaia, however now do not have the traditional rival match against Strathmerton, as they are in the North West Division. Muckatah
Muckatah is a locality in northern Victoria, Australia in the local government area of the Shire of Moira. The word Muckatah means 'a little plain'. History The post office opened on 1 November 1881 and was closed on 30 June 1920. Settlers arrived in Muckatah about 1876 when the area was thickly covered by huge trees. These were felled by axe, cut into lengths with a crosscut saw, shaped by broad axe and made into dwellings. The first crops of wheat were grown on areas of up to 10 acres or so with the bags of grain carted to Benalla and later, Numurkah. A bush track was used to travel to Shepparton for mail and supplies. The earliest selections were of 320 acres. A racecourse was in use by 1895 and a golf course on the same site in later years. The Strathmerton Football Netball Club, nicknamed the ''Bulldogs'', is an Australian rules football and netball club that was established in 1894 and has been affiliated with the Picola & District Football League since 1994. Barooga Football Club
The Barooga Football Netball Club, nicknamed the ''Hawks'', is an Australian rules football and netball club based in the town of Barooga located in the Riverina district of New South Wales. The club was formed in 1894 and initially played in the Murray Border Football Association in 1894. When the club won the Federal District Football Association premiership against Cobram Football Club in 1897, they were known as "The Boomerangs" and wore a red and white uniform. When Barooga FC re-formed in 1907 they wore an all-blue uniform in the Goulburn Valley Football Association in 1907 and 1908.
