Muckatah
Muckatah is a locality in northern Victoria, Australia in the local government area of the Shire of Moira. The word Muckatah means 'a little plain'. History The post office opened on 1 November 1881 and was closed on 30 June 1920. Settlers arrived in Muckatah about 1876 when the area was thickly covered by huge trees. These were felled by axe, cut into lengths with a crosscut saw, shaped by broad axe and made into dwellings. The first crops of wheat were grown on areas of up to 10 acres or so with the bags of grain carted to Benalla and later, Numurkah. A bush track was used to travel to Shepparton for mail and supplies. The earliest selections were of 320 acres. A racecourse was in use by 1895 and a golf course on the same site in later years. Goulburn Valley Football Association
The Goulburn Valley Football Association (GVFA) is an Australian rules football competition that was first established in 1888 in the Goulburn Valley of Victoria, Australia, with the foundation clubs being Cobram, Muckatah, Nathalia, Numurkah, Wunghnu and Yarroweyah. This football competition was separate to the Goulburn Valley District Football Association that was formed in 1893, that is still active today and now called the Goulburn Valley Football League. History The original GVFA was a football association that catered for the smaller rural towns of the Goulburn Valley region until 1931, when it was superseded by the Murray Football League when it was first established in 1931. Katamatite, Victoria
Katamatite is a town in Victoria, Australia about 46 kilometres north east of Shepparton. At the , Katamatite had a population of 433. Katamatite is located in the Murray Valley irrigation area. Township buildings were erected in 1877 and the Post Office opened on 1 December 1877. The townships name is said to be derived from a question, specifically "Kate, am I tight?" The town has an Australian rules football team competing in the Picola & District Football League. The team received publicity and notoriety back in 1925, when they defeated Wattville 78.19 (487) to 1.3 (9), in an attempt to win the minor premiership on percentage from Dookie. The Federal District Football Association (FDFA) was first established in 1897 at a meeting at Gedye's Victoria Hotel, Cobram, Victoria for the purpose of controlling the "Cobram Courier Cup" Australian rules football competition. Murray Football League
The Murray Football Netball League is an Australian rules football and netball league affiliated with the Victorian Country Football League. The league covers a large area of northern Victoria and southern New South Wales from Shepparton in the south to Deniliquin in the north. It covers much the same area as the Picola & District Football League but the teams tend to be the larger communities and towns. Charlie Fisher
Charlie "Spot" Fisher (17 November 1892 – 4 Mar 1983) was an Australian rules footballer in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Foortball Fisher played in three consecutive premierships for Muckatah in the Goulburn Valley Football Association in 1910, 1911 and 1912, before playing with Kyabram Football Club in the Goulburn Valley Football League (GVFL) in 1913 and 1914. Fisher made his debut for the Carlton Football Club in round 2 of the 1914 season. Fisher played with Kyabram in the GVFL on a Wednesday, then with Carlton in the VFL on a Saturday in 1914. Fisher managed to kick 39 goals for Kyabram in 11 games and 22 goals for Carlton in 16 games in 1914! Shire Of Cobram
The Shire of Cobram was a local government area on the Murray River in the Goulburn Valley region, about north of Melbourne, the state capital of Victoria, Australia. The shire covered an area of , and existed from 1953 until 1994. History The Shire of Cobram's origins lay in the North West Riding of the Shire of Tungamah, which was first incorporated on 15 May 1878. Cobram's development arose from irrigation projects developed in the 1930s; after World War II, returned servicemen were allocated irrigated holdings for fruit orchards and dairy farms, and Italian immigrants also took up land in the area. A town plan was drafted in 1949, and industrial and commercial growth increased. On 1 April 1953, Cobram was severed from Tungamah, and became a shire in its own right. Katunga
Katunga is a town in the Goulburn Valley region of northern Victoria, Australia. The town is located in the Shire of Moira local government area, 228 kilometres from the state capital, Melbourne. At the , Katunga had a population of 996. Katunga Post Office opened on 10 June 1881. The local railway station was opened on the Goulburn Valley railway in 1888, but today does not see regular passenger services. Katunga, similar to much of the surrounding area, is based on agriculture, including dairy production. Bizarrely, the town had two state primary schools with around 90 students at Katunga primary and 7 students at Katunga South primary just 2 km away. Katunga South closed at the end of 2021 after the last 3 students left. Ted Bourke
Edward Arthur Bourke (17 February 1904 – 27 November 1952) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Richmond and South Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the 1920s. Often playing at centre half back, Bourke spent his early football years with Muckatah, Tungamah and Brunswick. He kicked three goals on debut for Richmond in the opening round of the 1924 VFL season and participated in the round robin finals series which took place that year. After crossing to South Melbourne without success in 1927, Bourke missed the entire 1928 football season while he waited for a clearance to the Victorian Football Association. He was signed by Sandringham in 1929 and won the Recorder Cup in his first season. Moira Shire Council is a Local Government Area in the Northern Victoria Region of Victoria, Australia. Located in the north-east part of the state, it covers an area of . Cobram, Victoria
Cobram is a town in the Australian state of Victoria. It is on the Murray River which forms the border between Victoria and New South Wales. Cobram along with the nearby towns of Numurkah and Yarrawonga is part of Shire of Moira and is the administrative centre of the council. Yarroweyah ( ) is a town in northern Victoria, Australia. The town is located in the Shire of Moira local government area, north of the state capital, Melbourne and west of Cobram. The town is situated near the intersection of Kenny Road, Kokoda Road and the Murray Valley Highway. At the , Yarroweyah and the surrounding area had a population of 548.
