FS Class ETR 500
ETR 500 ('' Elettro Treno Rapido 500'') is a family of Italian high-speed trains built by AnsaldoBreda and introduced in 1993. Designed under the aegis of the Ferrovie dello Stato (FS), it is now operated by Trenitalia on RFI tracks. History The opening of the Direttissima line, connecting Florence with Rome, in stages between 1978 and 1991 was the first high speed line in Europe. Then, in the 1990s, FS unveiled plans to build a whole new high speed network. As the larger part of the network would be suited for speeds of , new, non-tilting trains had to be designed as the tilting equipment used in the ETR 450, 460 and 480 Pendolino series was not suited for speeds of over . The new train was to be built by the TREVI (''TREno Veloce Italiano'', "Italian Fast Train") consortium, formed by Breda Costuzioni Ferroviarie, FIAT Ferroviaria, Tecnomasio and Firema Trasporti. Prototypes In 1988 the first prototype motorcar, called ETR 500-X and nicknamed "Remo," as the brother of ...

Italian Railways
The Italian railway system is one of the most important parts of the infrastructure of Italy, with a total length of of which active lines are 16,723 km. The network has recently grown with the construction of the new high-speed rail network. Italy is a member of the International Union of Railways (UIC). The UIC Country Code for Italy is 83. The network '' RFI'' (''Rete Ferroviaria Italiana'', Italian Rail Network), a state owned infrastructure manager which administers most of the Italian rail infrastructure. The total length of ''RFI'' active lines is , of which are double tracks. Lines are divided into 3 categories: *''fundamental lines'' (''fondamentali''), which have high traffic and good infrastructure quality, comprise all the main lines between major cities throughout the country. Fundamental lines are long; *''complementary lines'' (''complementari''), which have less traffic and are responsible for connecting medium or small regional centers. Most of these ...

SCMT
Sistema di Controllo della Marcia del Treno (SCMT) is a discontinuous train cab signalling system used in Italy. It shares many features with the Ripetizione Segnali (RS) system, the two systems co-existing and working together. The main purpose of SCMT is to control the respect of the speed limit imposed by the signal aspect and the line condition. SCMT is divided in two parts: *SSB: ''Sottosistema di bordo'' ("Onboard Subsystem") *SST: ''Sottosistema di terra'' ("Ground Subsystem") Working principles SCMT is based upon an array of transponders called "Punto informativo" (PI) placed on the tracks near signals, reduced speed zones, and other important points along the line. The PIs form the SST. When a train passes over a PI, a set of "antennas" mounted in front of the first bogie energize it through induction. The PI then passes information about the aspect of the next signal through the antennas to the SSB. If the system is supported by RS, and if the signal shows a ...

RS4 Codici
RS4 Codici is a train protection system used in Italy. The term is an abbreviation of ''Ripetizione Segnali a 4 codici'' (''signal repetition system with 4 codes''). It is a simple cab signalling system, displaying the aspect of the next (and, in some cases, the next but one) signal. It helps the driver to reliably determine the aspect of the next signal even in poor visibility and at high velocities. The information is conveyed via amplitude modulation of a 50  Hz alternating current of the Blocco Automatico a Correnti Codificate (BAcc) in the rails. Receiver coils in front of the first axle of a locomotive or control car are used to detect the signal. The frequency of the modulating signal encodes the signal aspect: The driver must acknowledge a code change by pressing a button labeled ''RIC'' within three seconds, otherwise the system will apply emergency brakes. As trains got faster an additional set of codes sent with a 178 Hz carrier were added. The new system ...
