FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 1939
The FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 1939 took place February 11–19, 1939 in Zakopane, Poland. This was the Polish city's second time hosting the championships after having done so in 1929. It also marked the last time the event officially took place before World War II and the last time that these championships would be held on an annual basis (combined with the Winter Olympics) which they had been done since 1924. Zakopane
Zakopane ( Podhale Goral: ''Zokopane'') is a town in the extreme south of Poland, in the southern part of the Podhale region at the foot of the Tatra Mountains. John Westbergh
John Westbergh (August 6, 1915 – November 12, 2002) was a Swedish nordic skier who competed in the 1930s. In the military patrol event at the 1936 Summer Olympics he won the bronze medal with his Swedish team. He won two silver medals at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships, in 1938 (nordic combined) and in 1939 (cross-country skiing 4 × 10 km relay). Birger Ruud
Birger Ruud (23 August 1911 – 13 June 1998) was a Norwegian ski jumper and alpine skier. Career Born in Kongsberg, Birger Ruud, with his brothers Sigmund and Asbjørn, dominated international jumping in the 1930s, winning three world championships in 1931, 1935 and 1937. Ruud also won the Olympic gold medal in 1932 and 1936, the first repeat winner of ski jumping gold. He also was an accomplished alpine skier, winning a bronze medal in the combined at the 1935 world championships. Ruud won the Holmenkollen ski jumping competition in 1934 and shared the Holmenkollen medal in 1937 with Olaf Hoffsbakken and Martin P. Vangsli. In 1943, during the German occupation of Norway, Ruud was incarcerated at Grini concentration camp for expressing his anti-Nazi sentiments. Josef Bradl
Josef "Sepp" / "Bubi" Bradl (8 January 1918 – 3 March 1982) was an Austrian ski jumper who competed during the 1930s and 1950s. He was born in Wasserburg am Inn, Bavaria. Career on 15 March 1936, he became the first man in history to stand to stand on feet a "flight" of more than one hundred meters at 101.5 m (333 ft) on Bloudkova velikanka hill in Planica, Kingdom of Yugoslavia. On 15 March 1938, exactly two years later after historic jump, he set another world record at 107 m (351 ft), this time again on Bloudkova velikanka hill in Planica, Kingdom of Yugoslavia. Gustl Berauer
Gustav "Gustl" Berauer (5 November 1912 – 18 May 1986) was an ethnic German Czechoslovak nordic combined skier who competed in the 1930s. He was born in Petzer, Bohemia, Austria-Hungary, which is now known as Pec pod Sněžkou in the Czech Republic. At the 1936 Winter Olympics in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Berauer finished 14th in the Nordic combined, 21st in the 18 km cross-country event and was part of the Czechoslovak team that finished 5th in the 4 x 10 km relay. His real strength lay in the Nordic combined. He won a gold medal in that individual event at the 1939 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Zakopane while competing for Nazi Germany in the wake of Czechoslovakia being annexed in late 1938. It was the first German world champion in Nordic skiing. At the World Championships in 1941 in Cortina d'Ampezzo, he successfully defended his title.
