FIBA Promotion Cup
The FIBA European Championship for Small Countries is the lowest-ranked tier of the biennial FIBA EuroBasket competition, organized by FIBA Europe. History This championship was first introduced in 1988, as the Promotion Cup, the competition organized for the lowest ranked European national basketball teams. Since then, the competition has been held biannually. In 2007, the Promotion Cup was officially renamed EuroBasket Division C. FIBA EuroBasket
EuroBasket, also commonly referred to as the European Basketball Championship, is the main international basketball competition that is contested quadrennially, by the senior men's national teams that are governed by FIBA Europe, which is the European zone within the International Basketball Federation. The competition was first held in 1935. The former Soviet Union holds the record for most gold medals with a total of 14. The tournament is generally held in August or September, in the offseason of major club competitions. The current defending champion is Spain, who won the 2022 title. History Beginning The first championships was held three years after the establishment of FIBA, in 1935. Switzerland was chosen as the host country, and ten countries joined. 2022 FIBA European Championship For Small Countries
The 2022 FIBA European Championship for Small Countries was the 18th edition of this competition. It took place in Ta' Qali, Malta, from 28 June to 3 July 2022. Ireland were the defending champions; but they didn't participate in this edition. Participating teams Ireland, Moldova and Norway did not participate this season. They were replaced by Armenia, winners in 2016, which was about to come back to competition after its withdrawal from the EuroBasket 2021 pre-qualifiers, and Azerbaijan, winners in 2006 and 2008, which was set for a comeback to competition since its participation in the EuroBasket 2013 qualification. 2021 FIBA European Championship For Small Countries
The 2021 FIBA European Championship for Small Countries was the 17th edition of this tournament, hosted in Dublin, Ireland. Initially, the championship was postponed and then cancelled due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. It took place instead from 10 to 15 August 2021. The title was won by Ireland for the second time. Teams Moldova and Norway did not join this edition. They were replaced by Armenia, winners in 2016 which was about to comeback to competition after its withdrawal from the EuroBasket 2021 pre-qualifiers, and Azerbaijan, winners in 2006 and 2008, which was set for a comeback to competition since its participation in the EuroBasket 2013 qualification. Due to the postponement of the tournament to 2021, Armenia and Azerbaijan withdrew from participating in the tournament. 2018 FIBA European Championship For Small Countries
The 2018 FIBA European Championship for Small Countries was the 16th edition of this tournament. It was hosted by San Marino. Teams Seven teams played in the competition, with the return of Norway, 17 years after their last appearance in a FIBA competition. Armenia, that participates in the EuroBasket 2021 qualification, and Wales, integrated in the team of Great Britain, were the teams from the previous edition that did not participate in this one.
