2022 FIBA European Championship For Small Countries
The 2022 FIBA European Championship for Small Countries was the 18th edition of this competition. It took place in Ta' Qali, Malta, from 28 June to 3 July 2022. Ireland were the defending champions; but they didn't participate in this edition. Participating teams Ireland, Moldova and Norway did not participate this season. They were replaced by Armenia, winners in 2016, which was about to come back to competition after its withdrawal from the EuroBasket 2021 pre-qualifiers, and Azerbaijan, winners in 2006 and 2008, which was set for a comeback to competition since its participation in the EuroBasket 2013 qualification. Ta' Qali
Ta' Qali is a wide open space in the limits of Attard and Mosta in central and northern Malta respectively, which contains the national football stadium, the Malta Fairs & Conventions Centre, Ta' Qali National Park, a crafts village, and a national vegetable market which is locally known as the ''Pitkalija''. Shortly before World War II, the area was used to build a military aerodrome and a station for the Royal Air Force (RAF), which the British called RAF Ta Kali; Maltese place names were often corrupted in this fashion. RAF Ta Kali was operational throughout the war and continued to be used as an RAF airfield until the mid-1950s. Latterly, RAF squadrons based in the United Kingdom visited Ta Kali as part of their annual proficiency training. Since the departure of the RAF and the closure of the air base, the location has been transformed into a recreational area. The 2012 FIBA European Championship for Small Countries was the 13th edition of the tournament, formerly known as the ''Promotion Cup'' or the ''FIBA EuroBasket Division C''. It was played at Serravalle, San Marino, in 2–7 July. The draw took place on 4 December 2011, in Freising, Germany. The Andorra national team was the final winner of the Championship. The 2018 FIBA European Championship for Small Countries was the 16th edition of this tournament. It was hosted by San Marino. Teams Seven teams played in the competition, with the return of Norway, 17 years after their last appearance in a FIBA competition.
