Félix Tokoragi
Félix Tokoragi is a French Polynesian politician and Member of the Assembly of French Polynesia. He has served as Mayor of Makemo since 2014. He was elected to the Mekemo town council in 2014 and subsequently elected mayor. In December 2017 Tokoragi handcuffed a man who had attacked him to an entrance post outside the town hall while waiting for police. In November 2021 he was fined XPF 100,000 for violence by a person holding public authority for the offence. He was re-elected as Mayor in May 2020. He was first elected to the Assembly of French Polynesia in the 2018 French Polynesian legislative election as a Tapura Huiraatira representative. He later split from Tapura Huiraatira and allied with Nuihau Laurey and Nicole Sanquer Nicole Sanquer (born 16 June 1972) is a French Polynesian politician, and former Cabinet Minister. A here ia Porinetia () is a political party in French Polynesia. The party was formed in August 2020 and advocates a reduction in the size of the Assembly of French Polynesia to 39 members, the introduction of term limits to renew the political class, the legalisation of medicinal cannabis, and the repeal of French Polynesia's vaccination law. Formation The party was established in August 2020 by former Tapura Huiraatira MPs Nicole Sanquer, Nuihau Laurey, Bernard Natua, Teura Tarahu-Atuahiva, and Félix Tokoragi. To meet the six-MP minimum to form a group, Tahoera'a Huiraatira MP Vaitea Le Gayic was "loaned" to the party by Tahoera'a, joining it with the permission of Gaston Flosse. Assembly Of French Polynesia
The Assembly of French Polynesia (french: Assemblée de la Polynésie française, Tahitian: Te apo'ora'a rahi o te fenua Mā'ohi) is the unicameral legislature of French Polynesia, an overseas country of the French Republic. It is located at Place Tarahoi in Pape'ete, Tahiti. It was established in its current form in 1996 although a Tahitian Assembly was first created in 1824. It consists of 57 members who are elected by popular vote for five years; the electoral system is based upon proportional representation in six multi-seat constituencies. Every constituency is represented by at least three representatives. Since 2001, the parity bill binds that the number of women matches the number of men elected to the Assembly. Makemo
Makemo, Rangi-kemo or Te Paritua, is an atoll in the Tuamotu archipelago in French Polynesia. History Makemo is the home of legendary Polynesian hero Moeava. The first recorded European to arrive to Makemo Atoll was English pearl merchant John Buyers on the brig ''Margaret''. He arrived at Makemo on 10 March 1803 on the same day he discovered Taenga and named the Makemo Atoll "Phillips Island", after a late sheriff of London, Sir Richard Phillips. In some maps Makemo appears as "Kutusov". In the 19th century, Makemo became a French territory with a population of about 250 indigenous inhabitants around 1850, making it one of the largest in the Tuamotus; it was used as a port for ships. By mid-century, the atoll was evangelized with the founding of St. Joseph Parish in 1851 (which since 2004 also includes churches on Taenga and Nihiru Atolls), followed by the construction of the church of the same name in 1975, attached to the Diocese of Papetee. 2018 French Polynesian Legislative Election
Legislative elections were held in French Polynesia on 22 April and 6 May 2018. On 22 April 2018, voters cast their ballots in the first round of the election to the Assembly of French Polynesia. A second round was held on 6 May 2018 for the three political parties that exceeded 12.5 percent of the vote in the first round. The new Tapura Huiraatira party emerged as the largest in the Assembly, winning 38 of the 57 seats. Background The Tahoera'a Huiraatira party, an anti-independence party led by Gaston Flosse, previously won 38 of the 57 seats in the Assembly in the 2013 French Polynesian legislative election, 2013 general election. However, the governing Tahoera'a Huiraatira has been plagued by infighting and internal splits since 2013. Nuihau Laurey (born 29 December 1964) is a French Polynesian politician and former Cabinet Minister. He was vice-president of French Polynesia from 2014-2017 and one of the two senators for French Polynesia from 2015 to 2020. He was acting president of French Polynesia in 2014 between Gaston Flosse and Édouard Fritch's presidencies. Early life Laurey worked for the government-owned Socredo bank before working as a consultant. Nicole Sanquer (born 16 June 1972) is a French Polynesian politician, and former Cabinet Minister. She was a member of the French National Assembly from 2017 to 2022. Elected as a member of Tapura Huiraatira, she sits in the UDI and Independents group in the French Parliament. In 2020 she formed the A here ia Porinetia party. Early life Sanquer is the daughter of former French Polynesian education minister Nicolas Sanquer. She was educated at the University of French Polynesia, the Paul Bocuse institute of culinary arts in Écully, and ESSEC Business School, graduating with a masters degree in international hotel management in collaboration with Cornell University in 1997.
