The Luxembourg Tennis Federation (french: Fédération Luxembourgeoise de Tennis) is the tennis governing body in Luxembourg and responsible for the development of the game in the country. Tennis in Luxembourg Tennis is a popular sport, as it is across western Europe. There are 53 tennis clubs in the country, the oldest of which (TC Diekirch) was founded in 1902. The governing body is the Luxembourg Tennis Federation. The Luxembourg Open was held in Luxembourg (Kockelscheuer) until 2021, and was ranked as a WTA International tournament on the WTA Tour. Luxembourgers have had little success in professional tennis. Gilles Müller, considered the best men's player the country has ever produced, reached the quarter-finals of the 2008 U.S. Open and the 2017 Wimbledon Championships, has two ATP Titles and has a career high ranking of 21st. Tennis
Tennis is a racket sport that is played either individually against a single opponent ( singles) or between two teams of two players each ( doubles). Each player uses a tennis racket that is strung with cord to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over or around a net and into the opponent's court. The object of the game is to manoeuvre the ball in such a way that the opponent is not able to play a valid return. The player who is unable to return the ball validly will not gain a point, while the opposite player will. Tennis is an Olympic sport and is played at all levels of society and at all ages. Unlike in most countries in Europe, sports in Luxembourg are not concentrated upon a particular national sport, but encompasses a number of sports, both team and individual. Despite the lack of a central sporting focus, over 100,000 people in Luxembourg, which has a total population of only 610,000, are licensed members of one sports federation or another. Paul Helminger
Paul Helminger (28 October 1940 – 16 April 2021) was a Luxembourgish politician who was Mayor of Luxembourg City from 1999 to November 2011. He was a member of the Chamber of Deputies for the Democratic Party (from 1994 to 2012, and previously from 1984 until 1989). Biography Born in Esch-sur-Alzette in 1940, Paul Helminger moved with his family to Belair, a quarter in western Luxembourg City, when he was one year old. After he attained his baccalaureate in the Athénée de Luxembourg in 1959, Helminger went on to study law at the Sorbonne in Paris until 1963. Michel Wolter
Michel Wolter (born 13 September 1962 in Luxembourg City) is a Luxembourgian politician. He was the youngest-ever member of the Chamber of Deputies when elected in 1984, and served as Minister for the Interior from 1995 to 2004. He is also a businessman and a former international table tennis player. Michel Wolter grew up in Esch-sur-Alzette, second largest city of the country. He studied economics at the University of Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne from 1981 to 1985. Wolter was an international table tennis player from 1980 to 1984. Géza Wertheim
Géza Wertheim (3 July 1910 – 10 August 1979) was a Luxembourgian tennis player and bobsledder. He made thirty appearances for Luxembourg in the Davis Cup between 1947 and 1957, losing all thirty. He later became President of the Luxembourg Tennis Federation. Claudine Schaul (born 20 August 1983) is a former tennis player from Luxembourg. Her career-high rankings are world No. 41 in singles, which was achieved on 24 May 2004, and No. 71 for doubles, achieved on 8 November 2004. Schaul first played for the Luxembourg Fed Cup team in 1998, where she has a win–loss record of 42–43. Karin Kschwendt
Karin Kschwendt (born 14 September 1968) is a former professional tennis player who represented Luxembourg, Germany and Austria at various points in her career. She reached her career-high ranking of world No. 37 on 12 August 1996. In doubles, she went as high as No. 45 in February 1996. Kschwendt was born in Switzerland to Austrian parents Heinz and Edith, but grew up in Luxembourg, where she lived for 23 years. Anne Kremer
Anne Kremer (born 17 October 1975) is a Luxembourgish retired tennis player. Anne won two singles titles on the WTA Tour. On 29 July 2002, she achieved her best WTA ranking of world No. 18. Anne completed her schooling at the Athénée de Luxembourg and subsequently studied English and history at Stanford University in California. Kremer is a member of the Democratic and Liberal Youth in Luxembourg, and has entered politics. She ran for the Democratic Party in the 2009 election to the Chamber of Deputies of Luxembourg.
