Frédéric Benoît Victoire Jullien
Frédéric Benoît Victoire Jullien (13 April 1785 – 28 August 1825) was a French officer. Unlike his elder brothers, General Louis Joseph Victor Jullien de Bidon and Captain Thomas Prosper Jullien, he made his name under the Bourbon Restoration. Early life Jullien was born on 13 April 1785 in the Comtat Venaissin enclave of the Papal States. Military career In August 1807 he was made a lieutenant in Italy and on 8 May 1809 he fought in the Battle of Piave River. While crossing the river during the battle he received a sabre cut across his right cheek, stretching from his ear to his upper lip. In April 1809 the second Austrian campaign began and despite his wound, Jullien rejoined his unit in Germany that July. He was made a captain in the 28th Dragoon Regiment of the Grande Armée in August, at Graz in Styria. Battle Of Piave River
The Battle of Piave River was fought on 8 May 1809 between the Franco-Italian army under the command of Eugène de Beauharnais and an Austrian army led by Archduke John of Austria. The Austrian commander made a stand behind the Piave River but he suffered a defeat at the hands of his numerically superior foes. The combat took place near Nervesa della Battaglia, Italy during the War of the Fifth Coalition, part of the Napoleonic Wars. The initial Austrian invasion of Venetia succeeded in driving the Franco-Italian defenders back to Verona. At the beginning of May, news of Austrian defeats in Bavaria and inferiority in numbers caused Archduke John to begin retreating to the northeast. When he heard that his enemies were crossing the Piave, the Austrian commander turned back to give battle, intending to slow Eugène's pursuit of his army. Order Of St Louis
The Royal and Military Order of Saint Louis (french: Ordre Royal et Militaire de Saint-Louis) is a dynastic order of chivalry founded 5 April 1693 by King Louis XIV, named after Saint Louis (King Louis IX of France). It was intended as a reward for exceptional officers, notable as the first decoration that could be granted to non-nobles. By the authorities of the French Republic, it is considered a predecessor of the Legion of Honour, with which it shares the red ribbon (though the Legion of Honour is awarded to military personnel and civilians alike). Although officially abolished by the government authorities of the July Revolution in 1830 following the French Revolution, its activities carried on as a dynastic order of the formerly sovereign royal family.
