Fritz Prechtl
Fritz Prechtl (27 December 1923 – 12 September 2004) was an Austrian trade unionist and politician. Born in Vienna, Prechtl completed an apprenticeship as a locksmith, then worked as a fitter on the Austrian Federal Railway (ÖBB). He joined the Railway Workers' Union (GdE), becoming chair of his local branch in 1950 and serving on the central committee for ÖBB employees from 1959. In 1965, he was elected as president of the GdE, and the following year, he became vice-president of the Vienna Trades Council. In 1971, Prechtl was elected as president of the International Transport Workers' Federation. International Transport Workers' Federation
The International Transport Workers' Federation (ITF) is a democratic global union federation of transport workers' trade unions, founded in 1896. In 2017 the ITF had 677 member organizations in 149 countries, representing a combined membership of 19.7 million transport workers in all industrial transport sectors: civil aviation, dockers, inland navigation, seafarers, road transport, railways, fisheries, urban transport and tourism. The ITF represents the interests of transport workers' unions in bodies that take decisions affecting jobs, employment conditions or safety in the transport industry. Federal Council (Austria)
The Federal Council (german: Bundesrat, ) is the upper house of the Austrian Parliament, representing the nine States of Austria at the federal level. As part of a bicameral legislature alongside of the National Council, it can be compared with an upper house or a senate. In fact, however, it is far less powerful than the National Council: although it has to approve every new law decided for by this lower chamber, the latter can—in most cases—overrule the Federal Council's refusal to approve. National Council (Austria)
The National Council (german: Nationalrat) is one of the two houses of the Austrian Parliament and is frequently referred to as the lower house. The constitution endows the National Council with far more power than the Federal Council. Responsibilities The National Council is where Austria's federal legislative authority is concentrated; for a bill to become federal law, it must be resolved upon by this chamber. Bills passed by the National Council are sent to the Federal Council for corroboration. If the Federal Council approves of the bill or simply does nothing for eight weeks, the bill has succeeded. If the Federal Council vetoes the bill, the National Council may still force it into law by essentially just passing it again; a National Council resolution overruling a Federal Council objection merely has to meet a higher quorum than a regular resolution. Hans Düby
Hans Düby (30 January 1906 – 31 March 1978) was a Swiss trade unionist and politician. Born in Schüpfen, Düby was the son of Emil, who later became the leader of the Swiss Railwaymen's Association. Düby studied music in Bern at the Conservatoire, but then in 1925 undertook an apprenticeship with the Swiss Federal Railways. On completing the apprenticeship, he was taken on permanently as an administrative officer. In 1937, Düby joined the Swiss Railwaymen's Association (SEV), and in 1941 he became a branch secretary. From 1943, he began working full-time for the union as editor of its journal, ''Eisenbahner''. In 1954, he was elected as the SEV's general secretary, the leading role in the union. In 1960, his title was changed to president, but he remained the union's leader.
