French Ship Illustre (1781)
The ''Illustre'' was a 74-gun ''Magnanime'' class ship of the line of the French Navy. She took part in the War of American Independence and in the French Revolutionary Wars. Damaged beyond repairs during the Expédition d'Irlande, she was scuttled on 30 December 1796. Career War of American Independence On 11 December 1781, Bussy-Castelnau departed Cadiz with a squadron comprising the 64-gun ''Saint-Michel'' and ''Illustre'', under Bruyères-Chalabre, escorting three transports, to make his junction at Tenerife with another squadron under Guichen. the next day, they encountered a British squadron under Kempenfelt. Table Bay
Table Bay (Afrikaans: ''Tafelbaai'') is a natural bay on the Atlantic Ocean overlooked by Cape Town (founded 1652 by Van Riebeeck) and is at the northern end of the Cape Peninsula, which stretches south to the Cape of Good Hope. It was named because it is dominated by the flat-topped Table Mountain. History Bartolomeu Dias was the first European to explore this region in 1486. The bay, although famous for centuries as a haven for ships, is actually a rather poor natural harbour and is exposed to storm waves from the northwest. ''Ajax'' was a 64-gun ship of the line of the French Navy. Career Built as ''Maréchal de Broglie'' for private owners and transferred to the French East India Company, the ship sailed two journeys to China as a merchantman. In April 1779, she was purchased by the Crown to ferry furnitures to Isle de France (now Mauritius) and be commissioned as a warship upon her arrival. In June, she was coppered, and she received her name of ''Ajax'' on 13 August. On 16 February 1780, under Captain Bouvet de Précourt, ''Ajax'' departed Lorient with ''Protée'', ''Éléphant'' and ''Charmante'', escorting a convoy bound for India. ''Héros'' was a 74-gun ship of the line of the French Navy, known mostly for being the flagship of Pierre André de Suffren de Saint Tropez during the Anglo-French War. Career Construction She was built in 1778 at Toulon on a design by Joseph-Marie-Blaise Coulomb. Indian Ocean campaign under Suffren In 1781 she became part of Suffren's force, consisting of the 16-gun corvette ''Fortune'', five ships of the line, eight troopships and a thousand soldiers, all entrusted with carrying the French war effort into the Indian Ocean. The other warships were one other 74 gun ship ('' Annibal'') and three 64-gun ships ( ''Vengeur'', ''Sphinx'', and '' Artésien''). HMS ''Coventry'' was a 28-gun sixth-rate frigate of the Royal Navy, launched in 1757 and in active service as a privateer hunter during the Seven Years' War, and as part of the British fleet in India during the Anglo-French War. After seventeen years' in British service she was captured by the French in 1783, off Ganjam in the Bay of Bengal. Thereafter she spent two years as part of the French Navy until January 1785 when she was removed from service at the port of Brest. She was broken up in 1786. HMS ''Fortune'' was a British 14-gun sloop launched in 1778 that the French captured in April 1780. She then served with the French navy under the same name. British service Commander Charles Powell Hamilton commissioned ''Fortune'' in June 1778 for the Channel. ''Consolante'' was a 40-gun frigate of the French Navy, second ship of her class. She is notable as one of the earliest attempts at building a frigate armed with 24-pounders on the artillery deck, rather than the 18-pounders typical of the day. Career Although ''Consolante'' was designed to carry 24-pounders on her battery, on 2 February 1776 Lorient was ordered to arm her with 18-pounder long guns.
