Frei (island)
Frei is an island in Kristiansund Municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. The island lies south of the town of Kristiansund in the Nordmøre region of the county. The main villages on the island include Rensvik in the north, Kvalvåg in the east, and Nedre Frei in the south. The island was part of the old Frei Municipality from 1838 until 2008 when the island was merged into Kristiansund Municipality. The Viking-era Battle of Rastarkalv, between Haakon I of Norway and the sons of Eric I of Norway, took place near the village of Nedre Frei in 955 AD. Geography The highest point on the island is the mountain Freikollen. The island is covered with mountains, pine forests, marshes, and sparse other vegetation. The Freifjorden lies to the east and south, the Kvernesfjorden and Bremsnesfjorden lie to the west, and the Bolgsvaet bay and Omsundet strait lie to the north. Møre og Romsdal (; en, Møre and Romsdal) is a county in the northernmost part of Western Norway. It borders the counties of Trøndelag, Innlandet, and Vestland. The county administration is located in the town of Molde, while Ålesund is the largest town. The county is governed by the Møre og Romsdal County Municipality which includes an elected county council and a county mayor. The national government is represented by the county governor. Omsund Bridge
The Omsund Bridge ( no, Omsundbrua) is a bridge that crosses the strait Omsundet between the islands of Frei and Nordlandet in Kristiansund Municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. The link is actually made up of two bridges: The main bridge crosses form Nordlandet to the islet of Rensvikholmen and then the smaller Rensviksundet bridge completes the crossing to Frei. Prior to the merger of Kristiansund and Frei municipalities on 1 January 2008, the bridges crossed the border between the two municipalities. The original bridge was in use from 1940 until 1981. The second bridge is currently in use, and a third bridge has been proposed. The bridges lies just south of the Kristiansund Airport, Kvernberget. The Freifjord Tunnel ( no, Freifjordtunnelen) is a long undersea tunnel under the Freifjorden in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. The tunnel is part of the Norwegian National Road 70. The tunnel begins on the island of Frei in Kristiansund Municipality and then descends below the Freifjorden and ends on the island of Bergsøya in Gjemnes Municipality. Krifast
The Kristiansund Mainland Connection ( or abbreviated ''Krifast'') is a road system consisting of the European route E39 highway and Norwegian National Road 70 that connects Kristiansund Municipality to the neighboring islands of Frei, Bergsøya, and Aspøya and then to the mainland of Norway. Krifast opened in 1992 and consists of of road and of bicycle paths. The three main structures are the undersea Freifjord Tunnel, the Gjemnessund Bridge, and the Bergsøysund Bridge. A total of seven bridges are part of the ''Krifast'' system, the most famous one being the suspension bridge Gjemnessund Bridge from the island of Bergsøya to the mainland of Gjemnes Municipality, with high towers and a span between them of . Norwegian National Road 70
National Road 70 ( no, Riksvei 70) is a long national highway that runs from the town of Kristiansund in Kristiansund Municipality in Møre og Romsdal county and the village of Oppdal in Oppdal Municipality in Trøndelag county, Norway. The road starts in downtown Kristiansund. It passes an intersection with the terminus of County Road 64, before passing by Kristiansund Airport, Kvernberget. The road crosses via the Nordsund Bridge from the island of Nordlandet to the island of Gomalandet. Tustna (island)
Tustna is an island in Aure Municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. The island lies in the western part of the municipality. The island of Tustna lies west of the islands of Stabblandet and Solskjelsøya; to the northeast of the islands of Frei and Nordlandet; and south of the island of Smøla. The Edøyfjorden runs along the northern shores of the island, the Vinjefjorden (and Halsafjorden) are to the south, the Freifjorden is to the southwest, the Talgsjøen is to the west, and the open Norwegian Sea is to the northwest. Aspøya
Aspøya is an artificial island in Tingvoll Municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. It is located between the Freifjorden and the Tingvollfjorden. The European route E39 highway crosses Aspøya and connects it to the nearby island of Bergsøya to the west by the Bergsøysund Bridge–part of the Krifast bridge and tunnel system which connects the town of Kristansund to the mainland. To the east, the E39 highway connects it to the Straumsnes peninsula in Tingvoll. The highest point on the island is the mountain ''Vettafjellet''. The artificial island was once a peninsula that was connected to the mainland by the narrow, wide Nålsundeidet isthmus. Bergsøya is an island in Gjemnes Municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. The island is located near the junctions of the Freifjorden, Kvernesfjorden, and Tingvollfjorden. The highest point on the island is the tall mountain ''Varden''. Averøya is an island in the municipality of Averøy in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. It is located north of the Romsdal peninsula surrounded by the Kornstadfjord on the west and the Kvernesfjord on the south and east.
