Fredrik Kiil
Fredrik Kiil (né Kristoffersen; 29 September 1921 – 25 December 2015) was a Norwegian physician, known for his improvements on the artificial kidney. He was born in Narvik to Arne Kristoffersen and Marthea Kiil, and was married to physician Ragnhild Valberg. He died in December 2015. Among his works is the thesis from 1958, titled ''The function of the Ureter and Renal Pelvis''. He was awarded the ''Fridtjof Nansen Prize'' in 1974, the ''Jahre Prize'' in 1980, and the ''Dialysis Pioneering Award'' from the National Kidney Foundation in 1982. Narvik
( se, Áhkanjárga) is the third-largest municipality in Nordland county, Norway, by population. The administrative centre of the municipality is the town of Narvik. Some of the notable villages in the municipality include Ankenesstranda, Ballangen, Beisfjord, Bjerkvik, Bjørnfjell, Elvegård, Kjøpsvik, Skjomen, Håkvik, Hergot, Straumsnes, and Vidrek. Artificial Kidney
Artificial kidney is often a synonym for hemodialysis, but may also refer to the other renal replacement therapies (with exclusion of kidney transplantation) that are in use and/or in development. This article deals mainly with bioengineered kidneys/bioartificial kidneys that are grown from renal cell lines/renal tissue. The first successful artificial kidney was developed by Willem Kolff in the Netherlands during the early 1940s: Kolff was the first to construct a working dialyzer in 1943.
