Motorcycle speedway, usually referred to simply as speedway, is a motorcycle sport involving four and sometimes up to six riders competing over four anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit. The motorcycles are specialist machines that use only one gear and have no brakes. Racing takes place on a flat oval track usually consisting of dirt, loosely packed shale, or crushed rock (mostly used in Australia and New Zealand). Competitors use this surface to slide their machines sideways, powersliding or broadsiding into the bends. On the straight sections of the track, the motorcycles reach speeds of up to . Speedway Grand Prix are a series of stand-alone motorcycle speedway events over the course of a season used to determine the Speedway World Champion. The series started in 1995 replacing the previous format of a single event final. The first winner was Hans Nielsen of Denmark. Event format The format for a Grand Prix changed for the 2007 season onwards. Sixteen riders take part in each Grand Prix and over the course of twenty heats each rider will race against every other rider once. The top eight scorers advance to a semi-final and from each semi-final the 1st and 2nd placed riders will advance to the GP final. In this format all rides counted towards Grand Prix points totals, including the semi-final and final, the maximum points for a single GP is 21 (5x heat wins, semi final win and final win). Individual Speedway World Championship
The World Championship of Speedway is an international competition between the highest-ranked motorcycle speedway riders of the world, run under the auspices of the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM). The first official championships were held in 1936. Today, this official FIM championship is organised as a series of Speedway Grand Prix events, where points are awarded according to performance in the event and tallied up at the end of each season. However, up to 1994, it was run as a single-night event after qualifying rounds during the season, leading up to a big final of 20 heats, where points were awarded according to riders' heat placings and then tallied up at the end. The 1995 Speedway Grand Prix was the 50th edition of the official World Championship to determine the world champion rider. It was the first season in the Speedway Grand Prix era used to determine the Speedway World Championship, Speedway World Champion. Speedway World Team Cup
The Speedway World Team Cup was an annual speedway event held each year in different countries. The competition started in 1960 and was replaced with the Speedway World Cup in 2001. Format From 1960 until 1985 each team consisted of four riders and a reserve. A final meeting was held after qualifying rounds, the winner being decided on total points scored in that final meeting. In 1986, the teams that qualified for the 'final' raced three meetings, the winner of each meeting being awarded three points, second place awarded two points, and third place awarded a point. The total points gained over the three meetings determined the champion. In 1987, the three meeting system was used again, but this time the aggregate points scored by the individual riders were added together to determine the champion. 1988 saw the championship revert to the original format. Speedway World Cup
The Speedway World Cup is an annual motorcycle speedway, speedway event held each year in different countries. The first edition of the competition in the current format was held in 2001 and replaced the old Speedway World Team Cup, World Team Cup which ran from 1960 until 2000. The last edition was in 2017. From 2018, the World Cup was replaced by the Speedway of Nations, which effectively brought back the pairs format. However, in 2023 the World Cup will return. Format The final tournament usually lasted for about a week with four meetings held in six or seven days. It started with two first round "events", each consisting of four national teams. The 1994 Speedway World Team Cup was the 35th edition of the FIM Speedway World Team Cup to determine the team world champions. The format changed after the World Team Cup merged with the Speedway World Pairs Championship. Teams now consisted of just two riders with a reserve rider available if needed. The final took place on 18 September at the Holsteinring at Brokstedt in Germany. Sweden won their seventh title, which was their first for 24 years since the 1970 Speedway World Team Cup. Austria National Speedway Team
The Austria national speedway team are one of the teams that compete in international team motorcycle speedway. History The Austrian speedway team competed in the inaugural Speedway World Team Cup in 1960, finishing third in the central European round. With the exception of a three year spell from 1967 to 1969, Austria were ever present in the World Team Cup from 1960 to 2000. However, they were one of the weaker nations and struggled to qualify for the latter stages of the competition. The team faired better in the World Pairs Championship, reaching finals in 1971 and 1975. Since 2001, Austria have struggled further and have in the majority of cases failed to qualify for the World Cup or the Speedway of Nations (introduced in 2018). Their last significant appearance was in the final of the European Pairs Speedway Championship in 2016.
