Austria National Speedway Team
The Austria national speedway team are one of the teams that compete in international team motorcycle speedway. History The Austrian speedway team competed in the inaugural Speedway World Team Cup in 1960, finishing third in the central European round. With the exception of a three year spell from 1967 to 1969, Austria were ever present in the World Team Cup from 1960 to 2000. However, they were one of the weaker nations and struggled to qualify for the latter stages of the competition. The team faired better in the World Pairs Championship, reaching finals in 1971 and 1975. Since 2001, Austria have struggled further and have in the majority of cases failed to qualify for the World Cup or the Speedway of Nations (introduced in 2018). Their last significant appearance was in the final of the European Pairs Speedway Championship in 2016. Dany Gappmaier
Daniel Gappmaier known as Dany Gappmaier (born 26 September 1991) is a speedway rider from Austria. He is a six time champion of Austria. Career Gappmaier signed for Berwick Bandits for the 2016 Premier League speedway season season. The following season he was retained by Berwick but also signed for Swindon Robins in the top tier of British Speedway riding for the in the SGB Premiership 2017. In 2019, he secured his sixth Austrian Individual Speedway Championship. Fritz Dirtl
Friedrich "Fritz" Dirtl (1928–1956) was an international speedway rider from Austria. Speedway career Dirtl was a two times champion of Austria after winning the Austrian Individual Speedway Championship in 1949 and 1951. He was also a six times Longtrack champion of Austria. Dirtl was tragically killed competing in the 1956 Individual Speedway World Championship, at the Continental final stage. He was involved in a crash with fellow Austrian rider Josef Kamper and then fell into the path of Mieczysław Połukard. Andreas Bössner (born 19 August 1968) is a former motorcycle speedway rider from Austria. Career In 1987, Bössner represented the Austria national speedway team during the 1987 Speedway World Team Cup. He continued to participate in multiple World Cups and would go on to ride for Austria 20 times in total. Bössner became a multiple Austrian national champion after winning the Austrian Individual Speedway Championship for three consecutive years. The wins came in 1991, 1992 and 1993. Speedway Grand Prix
Speedway Grand Prix are a series of stand-alone motorcycle speedway events over the course of a season used to determine the Speedway World Champion. The series started in 1995 replacing the previous format of a single event final. The first winner was Hans Nielsen of Denmark. Event format The format for a Grand Prix changed for the 2007 season onwards. Sixteen riders take part in each Grand Prix and over the course of twenty heats each rider will race against every other rider once. The top eight scorers advance to a semi-final and from each semi-final the 1st and 2nd placed riders will advance to the GP final. In this format all rides counted towards Grand Prix points totals, including the semi-final and final, the maximum points for a single GP is 21 (5x heat wins, semi final win and final win). Adolf "Adi" Funk (1 July 1951 – 27 January 2010) was an Austrian motorcycle speedway rider who won the Austrian Championship four times. Australia is one of the major teams in international motorcycle speedway with the country regarded as the birthplace of the sport in the 1920s. The current team is managed by former rider Mark Lemon, and captained by 2012 World Champion Chris Holder. Australia finished 3rd in the 2014 Speedway World Cup Final on 2 August in Bydgoszcz, Poland. Speedway World Cup The Australian national speedway team has won both the Speedway World Team Cup (1960–2000) and the Speedway World Cup (2001–present) on two occasions respectively, and were a major force at the turn of the 21st century.
