Franklin W. Lutes
Franklin W. Lutes (1840 – April 6, 1915) was a soldier in the Union Army and a Medal of Honor recipient for his actions in the American Civil War. Lutes enlisted in the Army from Geddes, New York in March 1864. Serving with the 111th New York Infantry, he was captured at the Second Battle of Ream's Station, but later paroled and promoted to Corporal. When his regiment disbanded in 1865, he was transferred to the 4th US Artillery Regiment. Medal of Honor citation Rank and organization: Corporal, Company D, 111th New York Infantry. Oneida County, New York
Oneida County is a county in the state of New York, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 232,125. The county seat is Utica. The name is in honor of the Oneida, one of the Five Nations of the Iroquois League or ''Haudenosaunee'', which had long occupied this territory at the time of European encounter and colonization. The federally recognized Oneida Indian Nation has had a reservation in the region since the late 18th century, after the American Revolutionary War. Second Battle Of Ream's Station
The Second Battle of Ream's Station (also Reams or Reams's) was fought during the siege of Petersburg in the American Civil War on August 25, 1864, in Dinwiddie County, Virginia. A Union force under Maj. Gen. Winfield S. Hancock began destroying part of the Petersburg Railroad, which was a vital supply line for Gen. Robert E. Lee's Confederate army in Petersburg, Virginia. Lee sent a force under Lt. Gen. A. P. Hill to challenge Hancock and the Confederates were able to rout the Union troops from their fortifications at Reams Station. However, they lost a key portion of the railroad, causing further logistical difficulties for the remainder of the Richmond-Petersburg Campaign. The United States Army Center of Military History (CMH) is a directorate within the United States Army Training and Doctrine Command. Geddes, New York
Geddes is a town in Onondaga County, New York, United States. The population was 17,118 at the 2010 census. The Town of Geddes is west of the neighborhood of Far Westside of Syracuse. The town is a western suburb of Syracuse. History The town was formed from the Town of Salina in 1848. It is named after James Geddes, a prominent early settler who settled at the head of Onondaga Lake in 1794 and developed the salt industry. There also was an Old Geddes Village which included part of the west side of Syracuse and Tipperary Hill, the village square being located near St. Mark's Circle.
