Frank Mbalire
Frank Mbalire is a Ugandan musician and guitarist. He was one of the members of Afrigo Band. Early life and education Mbalire was born in Natete Kampala to Joseph Yawe and Dorotia Nambi. Music Mbalire joined Afrigo Band in the late 70s as a rhythm guitarist but later moved to "Thames band", from where he composed "Bamuleete" and "Sirikusuula". He relocated to Sweden for sometime before returning to Afrigo band. In 2009, Mbalire left Afrigo to form "Misty Jazz band", which also has Moses Matovu and had made Kampala Casino their home. He was a member of "Blazing beats" with Philly Lutaaya and Fred Kigozi. His song "Ndikwambalanga Ekkooti" was voted by Bukedde ''Bukedde'', is a daily Ugandan newspaper published in Kampala, Uganda. Kampala
Kampala (, ) is the capital and largest city of Uganda. Afrigo Band
The Afrigo Band is a musical band in Uganda. It is the longest-lasting musical group in the history of Uganda, having existed for 44 years by August 2019. History The band was formed by a group of eight musicians led by their band leader, vocalist, and alto saxophonist, Moses Matovu, who continued to lead the band on its 38th anniversary. Playing to their fans at home in Uganda, the group tours regularly in Europe and the United States to play to Ugandans in the Diaspora. He has been performing with the band since and is its leader, as of February 2015. Moses Matovu
Moses Matovu is a Ugandan musician and saxophonist. He is one of the founders of Afrigo Band, Uganda's longest-lasting band, founded in 1975. Early childhood and education Matovu was born on 19 June 1949 in Kawempe Division, Kampala District to Abdallah Bukenya and Solome Nakitto. When his parents separated, he moved to Mengo, with his mother at the age of five. He spent most of his childhood with his mother. He attended ''Namirembe Primary School'' and later Kibuli Secondary School. He also attended Pillai's Secondary School. However, Matovu's education was cut short in 1966 when traditional institutions were abolished. He was on scholarship from Buganda Kingdom. With no opportunity to continue in school, Matovu concentrated on football and also joined the music industry in 1967 as a vocalist with the Thunderbirds Band. Philly Lutaaya
Philly Bongoley Lutaaya (19 October 1951 – 15 December 1989) was a Ugandan musician who was the first prominent Ugandan to give a human face to HIV/ AIDS. He became a national hero because he was the first Ugandan to declare that he was HIV – positive. That was in 1988, when HIV still carried a lot of stigma. Before dying of AIDS, Lutaaya spent his remaining time writing songs about his battle with AIDS, releasing his last album ''Alone and Frightened'', including his famous song "Alone", influenced by Swedish duo Roxette's hit song ''It Must Have Been Love'', as well as touring churches and schools throughout Uganda to spread a message of prevention and hope. Lutaaya was popular in Uganda in the 1960s, and in the 1970s he toured the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, and Japan. In the mid 1980s, he settled in Stockholm, Sweden. ''Bukedde'', is a daily Ugandan newspaper published in Kampala, Uganda. It is the leading daily newspaper in the country for both English and Luganda papers with an estimated daily circulation of about 33,290 copies daily. Overview The newspaper is published by the Vision Group, which publishes the New Vision, Uganda's leading English daily newspaper.
