Frank M. Karsten
Frank Melvin Karsten (January 7, 1913 – May 14, 1992) was a Democratic United States Representative from Missouri. Biography Frank M. Karsten was born in San Antonio, Texas on January 7, 1913. His family moved to St. Louis, Missouri in 1925, and he graduated from Beaumont High School. Karsten was a staff assistant for Congressman John J. Cochran from 1934 to 1946. He attended National University (now George Washington University Law School) while working for Cochran, and graduated with an LL.B. in 1940. Karsten ran to succeed Cochran in 1946. He was elected as a Democrat to the Eightieth Congress, and was reelected 10 times, serving from January 3, 1947 to January 3, 1969). At a 1950 Congressional hearing, Karsten claimed he had seen a flying saucer. Twenty-fourth Amendment To The United States Constitution
The Twenty-fourth Amendment (Amendment XXIV) of the United States Constitution prohibits both Congress and the states from conditioning the right to vote in federal elections on payment of a poll tax or other types of tax. The amendment was proposed by Congress to the states on August 27, 1962, and was ratified by the states on January 23, 1964. Southern states of the former Confederate States of America adopted poll taxes in laws of the late 19th century and new constitutions from 1890 to 1908, after the Democratic Party had generally regained control of state legislatures decades after the end of Reconstruction, as a measure to prevent African Americans and often poor whites (and following passage of the Nineteenth Amendment, women) from voting. Clare Magee
Clare Magee (March 31, 1899 – August 7, 1969) was an American lawyer and politician from Missouri who served as a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1949 to 1953. Early life and education Born on a farm in Putnam County near Livonia, Missouri, Magee graduated from Unionville (Missouri) High School, and attended Kirksville State Teachers College and the University of Missouri. He studied law at the University of Missouri School of Law. Career During World War I, Magee served in the United States Navy as a seaman first class and small arms instructor. After the war, he homesteaded in the Bighorn Basin region and worked as a laborer for the United States Reclamation Service in Deaver, Wyoming. He was admitted to the bar in 1922, and commenced practice in Unionville, Missouri. Magee owned and operated his family's farm beginning in 1932, and was postmaster of Unionville from 1935 to 1941. Fairfield, Iowa
Fairfield is a city in, and the county seat of, Jefferson County, Iowa. It has a population of 9,416 people, according to the 2020 census. The median family income is $46,138, with 10% of families below the poverty line. The city is typical of the American Midwest, being situated amidst rolling farmlands filled with corn, soybean, cattle, and hogs. It became the county seat in 1839 with 110 residents and grew to 650 by 1847. Its library was established in 1853, and it held its first fair in 1854. Early architecture in Fairfield includes work by George Franklin Barber and Barry Byrne, who trained under Frank Lloyd Wright. History The area now known as Jefferson County was first settled in 1836, and became Jefferson County in 1839, with the new community of Fairfield as the county seat. Parsons College
Parsons College was a private liberal arts college located in Fairfield, Iowa. The school was named for its wealthy benefactor, Lewis B. Parsons Sr., and was founded in 1875 with one building and 34 students. Over the years new buildings were constructed as enrollment expanded. The school lost its accreditation in 1948 but regained it two years later. In 1955 the school appointed Millard G. Roberts as its president and this began a period of rapid expansion with the student population rising as high as 5,000 by 1966. There was a turning point, however, in 1966 when ''Life'' magazine published an article criticizing the college and its president. Later that year the school lost its accreditation and Roberts was asked to resign as president.
