Francišak Kušal
Francišak Kušal ( be, Францішак Кушаль, pl, Franciszek Kuszel), also Frantsishak Kushal, Franz Kushel (February 16, 1895, Piaršai, Russian Empire - May 1969, Rochester, New York, United States) was a Belarusian and Polish militaryman and politician. Biography Kušal was born into a family of Roman Catholic Belarusian near Valozhyn. After the outbreak of World War I, Kušal was drafted into the Russian army. He graduated from an infantry military school in Vilnia in 1916 and was sent to the Western Front. After the October Revolution he joined the Belarusian national movement that demanded the establishment of an independent or autonomous Belarusian republic. In 1919, he was arrested by Polish authorities for Belarusian pro-independence activism. In 1919-1921 Kušal was Deputy Head of the Belarusian Military Commission, a body organising Belarusian national military units within the Polish army. Operation Barbarossa (german: link=no, Unternehmen Barbarossa; ) was the invasion of the Soviet Union by Nazi Germany and many of its Axis allies, starting on Sunday, 22 June 1941, during the Second World War.
