Francisco Manso
Francisco Manso (born 28 November 1949), is a Portuguese filmmaker and producer. He is best known as the director of the critically acclaimed films, ''Napomuceno's Will'', '' The Consul of Bordeaux'' and ''O Nosso Cônsul em Havana''. Career He graduated in law at the University of Lisbon. In 1976, he graduated in film at Centro de Arte e Comunicação Visual (Ar.Co) and, in 1979 to 1980, completed courses in sound engineering and became the assistant director at the public television service Rádio e Televisão de Portugal (RTP). In 1978, he moved to cinema as the first assistant director for the film ''O Meu Nome É'', directed by Fernando Matos Silva. This was followed by ''O PrÃncipe com Orelhas de Burro'', directed by António de Macedo, in 1979. In 1980, he moved to Guinea Bissau and worked on the film ''Acto dos Feitos da Guiné'' which was directed by Matos Silva. The Liberal Revolution of 1820 ( pt, Revolução Liberal) was a Portuguese political revolution that erupted in 1820. It began with a military insurrection in the city of Porto, in northern Portugal, that quickly and peacefully spread to the rest of the country. The Revolution resulted in the return in 1821 of the Portuguese Court to Portugal from Brazil, where it had fled during the Peninsular War, and initiated a constitutional period in which the 1822 Constitution was ratified and implemented. ''A Ilha dos Escravos'' (''The Island of Slaves'' or ''The Isle of Slaves'') is a 2008 Cape Verdean, Brazilian, Portuguese and Spanish drama film directed by Portuguese director Francisco Manso. It was based on a novel named "O Escravo" ("The Slave") written in 1856 by José Evaristo de Almeida, a Portuguese who was exiled in Cape Verde. Plot The film takes place during the 19th century during a revolt by Miguelists who were exiled in Cape Verde, and centres on a love triangle between Maria ( Vanessa Giácomo), João ( Ângelo Torres) and Albano Lopes ( Diogo Infante). Aristides De Sousa Mendes
Aristides de Sousa Mendes do Amaral e Abranches () GCC, OL (July 19, 1885 – April 3, 1954) was a Portuguese consul during World War II. As the Portuguese consul-general in the French city of Bordeaux, he defied the orders of António de Oliveira Salazar's Estado Novo regime, issuing visas and passports to an undetermined number of refugees fleeing Nazi Germany, including Jews. For this, Sousa Mendes was punished by the Salazar regime with one year of inactivity with the right to one half of his rank's pay, being obliged subsequently to be retired. However, he ended up never being expelled from the foreign service nor forced to retire and he received a full consul salary until his death in 1954. One of Sousa Mendes most sympathetic biographers, Rui Afonso, has reckoned that he continued to receive a salary at least three times that of a teacher.
