Francesco Spoto
Francesco Spoto (8 July 1924 – 27 December 1964) was an Italian people, Italian Catholic Church, Catholic priest who served in the missions in the Democratic Republic of Congo and was killed there. He was also a professed member from the Missionary Servants of the Poor. His beatification was celebrated in Palermo on 21 April 2007 after Pope Benedict XVI approved the fact that the priest had been killed "in odium fidei" – in hatred of the faith. Cardinal Salvatore De Giorgi presided over the celebration on the behalf of the pope. Life Francesco Spoto was born in Raffadali in mid-1924 and he was baptized on 24 September 1924. His cousin was a priest. Spoto commenced his studies for the priesthood in Palermo in 1936 and he later became a professed member of the Missionary Servants of the Poor. Postulator
A postulator is the person who guides a cause for beatification or canonization through the judicial processes required by the Roman Catholic Church. The qualifications, role and function of the postulator are spelled out in the ''Norms to be Observed in Inquiries made by Bishops in the Causes of Saints'', which has been in effect since 7 February 1983. A petitioner seeking the beatification may appoint as postulator anyone, cleric or not, who is an expert in theological, canonical and historical matters, and versed in the practice of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, subject to the approval of the bishop. Paolo Romeo
Paolo Romeo (born 20 February 1938) is a cardinal and archbishop emeritus of Palermo. He was appointed to the see of Palermo by Pope Benedict XVI on 19 December 2006. Romeo was the fifth of nine children. After primary school he entered the seminary and began studying theology. His bishop sent him to Rome in 1959 to complete his academic studies and he achieved the licentiate in theology at the Gregorian University and a doctorate in canon law at the Pontifical Lateran University. He was ordained on 18 March 1961 at the chapel of the Episcopal Seminary of Acireale, he was incardinated in the Diocese of Acireale. In the Catholic Church, a ''positio'' (''Positio super Virtutibus'') is a document or collection of documents used in the process by which a person is declared Venerable, the second of the four steps on the path to canonization as a saint. Description A ''positio'' is a formal brief arguing for the canonization of an individual in the Roman Catholic Church. In the Catholic Church, the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints, previously named the Congregation for the Causes of Saints (), is the dicastery of the Roman Curia that oversees the complex process that leads to the canonization of saints, passing through the steps of a declaration of "heroic virtues" and beatification.
