Football In Liechtenstein
One of the most popular sports in Liechtenstein is football. In Liechtenstein there is no national association football league however there are seven clubs in Liechtenstein which play in the Swiss football league system. Men's national football team In the qualification for the World Cup in Germany in 2006, they achieved two victories and two draws (2–2 against Portugal and 0–0 Slovakia). In the qualification for the EURO 2008 they gained seven points in a tough group with Spain, Sweden, Northern Ireland, Denmark, Latvia and Iceland. Women's national football team In 1985, almost no country in the world had a women's national football team, including Liechtenstein who did not have a team by 2006 on either the senior or youth level. The women's national team has never competed at the Women's World Cup nor entered the European Championship for Women. Liechtenstein Football Association
The Liechtenstein Football Association (LFV) (german: Liechtensteiner Fussballverband) is the governing body of football in Liechtenstein. It was established on 28 April 1934, and became affiliated to UEFA on 22 May 1974. The association organizes the Liechtenstein national football team and the Liechtenstein Football Cup. Because Liechtenstein has fewer than 8 (only 7 not counting reserves) active teams, it is the only UEFA member without its own national league. This means the Liechtensteiner teams play in the Swiss Football League system. The LFV is based in Schaan. FC Balzers
FC Balzers is a Liechtensteiner football team based in Balzers. They currently compete in the Swiss 2nd League inter-regional, the fifth tier of Swiss football. Balzers play at Sportplatz Rheinau which is situated right next to the Rhine next to the border with Switzerland where the town of Trübbach lies. History Formation and early years (1932–1970) Founded in Balzers in 1932, FC Balzers was the first foreign team to join the Swiss Football Association and therefore is the oldest football team from Liechtenstein. Mario Frick (footballer)
Mario Frick (born 7 September 1974) is a Liechtensteiner retired professional footballer who is currently a manager for FC Luzern. He has earned 125 caps and scored a national record 16 goals for his country from his international debut in 1993 until his retirement in 2015. Mainly a striker, Frick was also deployed as a centre-back on occasion. Club career Early career Born in Chur, Graubünden, Switzerland, Frick started his career with the youth team at Liechtensteiner club FC Balzers, in which he then played four seasons in the first team within the early 1990s. In 1994, Frick played abroad for the first time, signing with FC St. Gallen. In doing so, Frick became the first ever professional footballer in Liechtenstein history. The UEFA Europa Conference League (abbreviated as UECL) is an annual football club competition organised by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) for eligible European football clubs. Clubs qualify for the competition based on their performance in their national leagues and cup competitions. FC Triesen is a Liechtensteiner football club that plays in Triesen. It is one of the seven official teams in the nation, and it plays in the Swiss Football League in 3. Liga, which is the seventh tier. The team annually competes in the Liechtensteiner Cup which was won by the team 8 times in its history.
