Flower Carpet
A flower carpet, french: tapis de fleurs, nl, bloementapijt, es, alfombra de flores, it, infiorata, ml, പൂക്കളം or pookkalam is a carpet made of flowers arranged in patterns. Flower carpet events happen in many places around the world. One of the most popular flower carpet events is the Flower Carpet biennial in Brussels. Flower carpets are made on the occasion of Onam festival in Kerala, India, to welcome the legendary king, Mahabali. The Guinness World Record for the largest flower carpet of the world is for Jardines of Mexico, where an 18,000 m2 flower carpet was made on 8 December 2018. Carpets of live flowers are arranged for the Feast of Corpus Christi in Spycimierz, Klucz, Olszowa, Zalesie Śląskie, Zimna Wódka in Poland. The tradition was inscribed on UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2021. Flower Carpet (Brussels)
The Flower Carpet (french: Tapis de Fleurs, nl, Bloementapijt) is a biennial event in Brussels in which volunteers from around Belgium convene at the Grand-Place/Grote Markt, the historic centre of the city, to weave a carpet-like tapestry out of colourful begonias. The event takes place every other August, coordinating with Assumption Day. Nearly a million flowers are required to create the ephemeral carpet. History The first Flower Carpet was created in 1971 by the Ghent landscape architect Etienne Stautemans in an effort to advertise his work, and due to its popularity, the tradition continued in subsequent years. Onam
Onam ( ) is an annual Indian harvest festival celebrated predominantly by the Hindus of Kerala. A major annual event for Keralites, it is the official festival of the state and includes a spectrum of cultural events. Onam commemorates Vamana and King Mahabali. According to Hindu legends, Onam is celebrated in Kerala in remembrance of the good governance under the rule of daitya king Mahabali, a mythical king who once ruled Kerala. The legend holds that jealous of Mahabali's popularity and his power, the devas and gods conspired to end his reign. They sent Vamana to earth in the form of a dwarf Brahmin who trampled Mahabali to patala (netherworld). Vamana asked Mahabali for three feet of land as his wish from the generous Mahabali. Mahabali
Mahabali (IAST: Mahābalī), also known as Bali, Indrasenan, or Māveli, is a daitya king featured in Hinduism. He is the grandson of Prahlada, and a descendant of the sage Kashyapa. There are many versions of his legend, in ancient texts such as the ''Shatapatha Brahmana'', ''Ramayana'', ''Mahabharata'', and several ''Puranas''. According to Hindu literature, he was banished beneath the earth into the ''patala'' (netherworld) by the Vamana avatar of Vishnu. The Feast of Corpus Christi (), also known as the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, is a Christian liturgical solemnity celebrating the Real Presence of the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ in the elements of the Eucharist; it is observed by the Roman Catholic Church, in addition to certain Western Orthodox, Lutheran, and Anglican churches. Spycimierz is a village in the administrative district of Gmina Uniejów, within Poddębice County, Łódź Voivodeship, in central Poland. It lies approximately south-west of Uniejów, west of Poddębice, and west of the regional capital Łódź. The village has a population of 380. It is famous for a beautiful celebration of the Corpus Christi (feast), Corpus Christi feast when the inhabitants create flower carpets along the 2 km long route of the procession.
