Flatidae
Flatidae are a family of fulgoroid planthoppers. They are cosmopolitan in distribution and are distinguished from others in the superfamily by a combination of characters. Like all other planthoppers, they suck phloem sap of plants. Some species are known to communicate with vibrations through the plant stems. Communication may be with mates, or with ants that tend the nymphs, protecting them and gathering honeydew secretions. Adults of some species have brightly coloured forewings which are tougher and known as tegmina unlike the membranous hindwings which are used for flight. Although a few can be identified by their coloration, most species requires dissection and examination under a microscope with access to literature on already described species. There are two sub-families within the family. In the subfamily Flatinae, the body of adults is flattened laterally and the tegmina are tent-like. In the Flatoidinae, the body is not laterally compressed and the tegmina are not ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Oryxa
''Oryxa'' is a genus of planthoppers in the hemipteran family Flatidae. They live on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra, and in Malaysia. The genus was established in 1902 by Leopold Melichar in his monograph of the families Acanaloniidae and Flatidae. Melichar designated Carl Linnaeus' ''O. truncata'' to be the type species of his new genus, but Melichar's specimens were not of the species described by Linnaeus. A replacement name In biological nomenclature, a ''nomen novum'' (Latin for "new name"), new replacement name (or replacement name, new substitute name, substitute name) is a scientific name that is created specifically to replace another scientific name, but only w ... of '' Oryxa melichari'' was therefore chosen for Melichar's species; the status of Linnaeus' species remains unclear. Ceryniini
The Flatinae are a subfamily of planthoppers, erected by Maximilian Spinola in 1839. Genera have been recorded from all continents except Antarctica: especially in tropical and subtropical regions. Description Like all other planthoppers, they suck phloem from plants. The antennae are small and the second segment is longer and ends in a bulge and a flagellum arises from it. They have two ocelli and nymphs have a tail of waxy filaments. Of the two sub-families in the Flatidae, the bodies of adult Flatinae are flattened laterally and the tegmina are tent-like (unlike the Flatoidinae, where the body is not laterally compressed and the tegmina are not as tent-like). Flata
''Flata'' is the type genus of planthoppers in the family Flatidae and tribe Flatini (subtribe Flatina), erected by Johan Christian Fabricius in 1798. Species are recorded from subtropical and tropical Asia including India, China, Indochina and Malesia (but records are probably incomplete). Status and Description The genus ''Flata'' has historically included more than two hundred species, many of which have subsequently been transferred to other genera and families. Three non-oriental species currently included here are "of uncertain generic affinity".Peng L, Fletcher MJ, Zhang Y-L (2012) Review of the Oriental planthopper genus Flata Fabricius (Hemiptera: Fulgoroidea: Flatidae) with the description of five new species. Planthopper
A planthopper is any insect in the infraorder Fulgoromorpha, in the suborder Auchenorrhyncha, a group exceeding 12,500 described species worldwide. The name comes from their remarkable resemblance to leaves and other plants of their environment and that they often "hop" for quick transportation in a similar way to that of grasshoppers. However, planthoppers generally walk very slowly. Distributed worldwide, all members of this group are plant-feeders, though surprisingly few are considered pests. The infraorder contains only a single superfamily, Fulgoroidea. Fulgoroids are most reliably distinguished from the other Auchenorrhyncha by two features; the bifurcate ("Y"-shaped) anal vein in the forewing, and the thickened, three-segmented antennae, with a generally round or egg-shaped second segment (pedicel) that bears a fine filamentous arista. Overview Planthoppers are laterally flattened and hold their broad wings vertically, in a tent-like fashion, concealing the sides of t ... Siphanta
''Siphanta'' is a genus of planthoppers in the family Flatidae. Description In adults of ''Siphanta'', the frons is slightly convex to flat, has a median longitudinal carina and either lacks lateral carinae or these are very short. The vertex meets the frons at a carinate margin. The pronotum is flat medially and has lateral carinae that curve posterolaterally and do not reach the posterior margin. The posterior margin of the pronotum is broadly concave. The mesonotum is also flat medially (occasionally with a faint median carina) and has two lateral carinae. The forewing (tegmen) is triangular, lacks apical lines and has a sutural angle that ranges from obtusely rounded to slightly acute. The tibia of the hind leg bears one spine. Diet Like other planthoppers, ''Siphanta'' are herbivores. ''Siphanta acuta'' is polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a wide range of plants. It is a pest of banana, citrus, coffee, guava, macadamia and various ornamental plants. ''Siphanta gregaria'' ...
