Men competed in both individual and team events for each of the three weapon types (épée, foil and sabre), but women competed only in foil events. Stefano Cerioni (born 24 January 1964) is an Italian foil fencer, Olympic team champion in 1984, Olympic champion in 1988 and World team champion in 1985 and 1994. He became a fencing master, then a director of foil, first for Italy, then for Russia, then again for Italy. Athletic career Cerioni was born in 1964 in Madrid, where his father was working. His parents moved back to Jesi, in Italy, when he was a child. He learned fencing under Ezio Triccoli, a family friend, who also coached Olympic champions Valentina Vezzali and Giovanna Trillini in their formative years. He practiced both sabre and foil, but foil quickly gained his preference. Cerioni won the silver medal at the 1983 Junior World Championships in Budapest, then the gold medal in 1984 in Leningrad. Mauro Numa
Mauro Numa (born 8 November 1961 in Mestre) is an Italian fencer and one of the strongest during the 1980s.His career started very early and in 1979, at 18, he was included in the Foil's Italian Team. In 1980 Numa could not compete at the Moscow Olympic Games due to the boycott. Angelo Mazzoni
Angelo Mazzoni (born 3 April 1961, in Milan) is an Italian épée fencer who competed at six consecutive Olympics between 1980 and 2000, winning gold in 1996 and 2000. Career He was the eighth fencer, and the first Italian fencer, to compete at six Olympics. He was the third Italian, after Piero and Raimondo D'Inzeo, to compete at six Olympics. At the World Championships, he placed third in 1983 and second in 1990. At the European Championships, he came first in 1981 and third in 1983. He was coached by Italian coach Gianni Muzio. In February 2008, he and Muzio were hired by the Fencing Federation of Switzerland to be in charge of coaching the Switzerland men's and women's team for the 2012 London Olympics.
