Family Literacy
Family literacy is a method of education. Relatively new, family literacy is being put into practice in the United States, Canada, and South Africa. Philosophy The roots of family literacy as an educational method come from the belief that “the parent is the child’s first teacher.” Studies have demonstrated that adults who have a higher level of education tend to not only become productive citizens with enhanced social and economic capacity in society, but their children are more likely to be successful in school. Literate parents are better able to support the learning of their children. Establishing family literacy programs is the most effective strategy to increase parental involvement and literacy development. The purpose of parental literacy curriculum is to increase students’ academic achievement. When family literacy programs are established parents become advocates for their child's literacy. The Centre for Family Literacy is a non-profit organization in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. History The Centre for Family Literacy began in 1980 under the name Prospects Adult Literary Association. Literacy
Literacy in its broadest sense describes "particular ways of thinking about and doing reading and writing" with the purpose of understanding or expressing thoughts or ideas in written form in some specific context of use. Even Start Program
The Even Start Program is a federally funded program in the United States that gives families access to training and support to create a literate home environment and enhance the academic achievement of their children. The program was first authorized in 1988, and administration was moved to individual states in 1992. The program aims to: *Help children to reach their full potential as learners (early childhood education) *Provide literacy training for parents (adult education) *Help parents to become full partners in education of their children (parenting education) In May 2009, President Barack Obama proposed eliminating the program.
