The FIL European Luge Championships 2010 took place 19 – 24 January 2010 in Sigulda, Latvia for the second time, hosting the event previously in 1996. Sigulda
Sigulda (; german: Segewold, pl, Zygwold, russian: Сигулда) is a town in the Vidzeme region of Latvia, from the capital city Riga. Overview Sigulda is on a picturesque stretch of the primeval Gauja river valley. Because of the reddish Devonian sandstone which forms steep rocks and caves on both banks of the river, Sigulda has been called the "Switzerland of Vidzeme". After the restoration of Latvian independence in 1991, an emphasis was placed on conserving Sigulda's public monuments and parks as well as improving the town's tourist sector. Vera Zozula
Vera Zozulya (russian: Вера Васильевна Зозуля, lv, Vera Zozuļa; born 15 January 1956 in Talsi, Latvian SSR) is a Soviet luger who competed during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Competing in two Winter Olympics, she won the gold medal in the women's singles event at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. Zozulya also won a complete set of medals in the women's singles event at the FIL World Luge Championships with a gold in 1978, a silver in 1977, and a bronze in 1981. At the FIL European Luge Championships, she won two medals in the women's singles event with a gold in 1976 and a bronze in 1978. She won the overall women's singles Luge World Cup title in 1981-2. Zozulya later became a coach for lugers in the Soviet Union, Latvia, and Poland. Andreas Linger
Andreas Linger (born 31 May 1981, in Hall in Tirol) is an Austrian retired luger who has competed internationally since 2000. He and his younger brother Wolfgang began luging at a very young age, and did their first doubles run when they were 14. Linger has won five medals at the FIL World Luge Championships with three golds (Men's doubles: 2003, 2011 and 2012) and two bronzes (Mixed team: 2003 and men's doubles: 2013). He also earned seven medals at the FIL European Luge Championships with a gold (Men's doubles: 2010), three silvers (Men's doubles: 2008, Mixed team: 2008, 2010), and three bronzes (Men's doubles: 2004 and 2014, Mixed team: 2004). FIL European Luge Championships 2008
The FIL European Luge Championships 2008 took place January 7-13, 2008 at the Cesana Pariol track in Cesana, Italy. The relay competition took the place of the team event that had been held at every European championship since 1988. This event had all teams start at the same part of the track (located at the women's singles/ men's doubles start house), then run down to the finish and tap on a relay marker to exchange from one slider on a team to the next (men's doubles to women's singles to men's singles) with the fastest time winning. A luge is a small one- or two-person sled on which one sleds supine (face up) and feet-first. A luger steers by using the calf muscles to flex the sled's runners or by exerting opposite shoulder pressure to the seat. Racing sleds weigh for singles and for doubles. Nina Reithmayer (born 8 June 1984 in Innsbruck) is an Austrian luger who has competed since 2002. Competing in two Winter Olympics, she won a silver medal in the women's singles event at Vancouver in 2010.
