Winterberg ( Westphalian: ''Winnenmerg'') is a town in the Hochsauerland district of North Rhine-Westphalia, central Germany and a major winter sport resort of the Wintersport Arena Sauerland. Reinhold Sulzbacher (born 29 July 1944 in Liezen) was an Austrian luger who competed in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He won the gold medal in the men's doubles event at the 1982 FIL European Luge Championships in Winterberg, West Germany. Sulzbacher also won the men's doubles overall Luge World Cup title three times (1979–80, 1980–1, 1981-2). FIL European Luge Championships
The FIL European Luge Championships, part of the International Luge Federation (FIL) have taken place since 1914. From 1914 to 1934, these championships were part of the Internationaler Schlittensportsverband (ISSV - International Sled Sport Federation in ). From 1935 to 1956, the championships were held under the auspices of the Fédération Internationale de Bobsleigh et de Tobogganing (FIBT - International Bobsleigh and Tobagganing Federation in ). Since 1962, the event has been under the auspices of the FIL and has been held in even-numbered years since 1980. Since 2012, it is held annually. Franz Wembacher (born 15 November 1958 in Bischofswiesen, Bavaria) was a West German luger who competed in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He won the gold medal in the men's doubles event at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo. Wembacher also won three bronze medals in the men's doubles event at the FIL World Luge Championships (1979, 1981, 1983). Hans Rinn (born 19 March 1953 in Langewiesen, Bezirk Suhl) is an East German former luger who competed from the early 1970s to the early 1980s. He won three medals at the Winter Olympics, including two gold (doubles: 1976, 1980) and one bronze (singles: 1976). Rinn also won eight medals at the FIL World Luge Championships with four golds (singles: 1973, 1977, doubles: 1975, 1977), three silvers (singles: 1974, doubles: 1973, 1979), and one bronze (1978). At the FIL European Luge Championships, Rinn won 13 medals. Günther Lemmerer
Günther Lemmerer (born 4 April 1952, in Graz) was an Austrian luger who competed in the early 1980s. He won the gold medal in the men's doubles event at the 1982 FIL European Luge Championships in Winterberg, West Germany. Competing in two Winter Olympics, Lemmerer earned his best finish of fifth in the men's doubles event at Sarajevo in 1984. He won the men's doubles overall Luge World Cup title three times (1979–80, 1980-1, 1981-2). After retiring from competition in the mid-1980s, Lemmerer became a development coach for the International Luge Federation (FIL), developing luge teams from Greece, Bermuda, India, Somalia, Argentina, and Venezuela. Steffi Martin
Steffi Martin Walter (17 September 1962 – 21 June 2017) was a German luger who competed during the 1980s, representing East Germany. She won two Olympic gold medals in the women's singles event, two gold medals at FIL World Luge Championships, one gold medal at FIL World Luge Championships, and two silver medals at FIL European Luge Championships. Personal life Martin was born in Lauter, Saxony on 17 September 1962. After marriage, she lived in Großdubrau with her husband and had three children. After their first child was born, she took a break from sports but returned later. She quit active sports due to family and health issues and worked as a physiotherapist. She completed her studies in law and worked in county administration. She was named an honorary citizen of Lauter in 1998.
